Project Update

Strategies, tools and partnerships for more inclusive cities worldwide

Smart Universities for All

Smart Cities for All, in collaboration with G3ict’s International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) division, has begun exploring how universities can be more inclusive as they are deploying technology and using data. Increasingly, higher education institutions are undergoing a digital transformation similar to Smart Cities, i.e. they are using data and technology to support their broad range of services from instruction to transportation to public safety to healthcare. Over the past several weeks and with support of the Microsoft corporation, G3ict and its SC4A and IAAP divisions have been engaging higher education institutions and experts to better understand how they think about accessibility and inclusion as they deploy technology and use data.  Between June and August, SC4A and IAAP conducted three focus groups that included ten (10) higher education institutions, including Georgia Tech and the University of Illinois. Leveraging insights, feedback, and direction from all these experts, G3ict and IAAP has begun to evaluate and adapt the SC4A Digital Inclusion Maturity Model (MaMo) for assessing how higher education institutions are deploying technology and the impact on the inclusion of persons with disabilities. Assessing Smart Cities in Mexico

G3ict, Smart Cities for All, and partners continue to bring the Digital Inclusion Maturity Model assessment tool to cities worldwide. In recent weeks, G3ict convened expert teams to work with city government leaders in Mexico’s two largest cities, Mexico City and Guadalajara, to assess how each is ensuring ICT accessibility and digital inclusion of persons with disabilities and older persons when deploying technology and implementing Smart City programs. G3ict led the assessment teams, which included experts from civil society (HearColors, Illumina) and industry (Microsoft, Moovit, IBM). The Smart Cities for All country representative for Mexico, Andres Balacazar represented The National Human Rights Commission. The expert teams used the Smart Cities for All Digital Inclusion Maturity Model tool to engage city leaders in a discussion around 30 variables that define inclusion and accessibility in smart cities. The output of these assessments is a set of scores and a roadmap for improvement across important variables related to the city’s culture, strategy, processes, and use of technology and data.

Moving forward, G3ict and Smart Cities for All are working on a new round of assessments of cities in November. In addition, G3ict, Smart Cities for All, and its partners are creating an online version of the assessment tool. Having a digital version of the tool will support scaling the deployment of the tool to more cities around the world and more opportunities for partnering in support of digital inclusion of persons with disabilities in cities worldwide.
