Abalone is back starting this Saturday 12th December!!
We are looking for volunteers so if can please help out, please meet in the boat shed at 6am to get everything ready and then walk down to our positions. It finishes at 8am. You will get hours for this.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you can help out.
We need to clarify the issues around medical exemptions for requals and patrolling while not fully fit.
The situation regarding medical exemptions for requals has been clarfied by SLSWA. It is now clear that there are no medical exemptions for requals. Members need to be able to complete the full scope of any award requal or they are unable to requal. If a requal is not done prior to 31st December then that award lapses. Members need to have a valid award to be able to patrol. Members also need to be able to perform the full scope of their award(s) at any time to be able to patrol.
The above means is that if a member temporarily cannot for example perform CPR due to an injury then they would not be able to perform the full scope and/or requal the Bronze, ART or Provide First Aid awards. If these are their only awards then they cannot patrol until able to perform the full duties of their award(s). If however they also held the Radio or Beach Management Silver award then they could continue to patrol under the scope of those awards.
We value all our patrolling members and want as many as possible to be able to patrol. However, we also all need to bear in mind our duty of care to each other, including the public who attend our beaches and rely on those in Red and Yellow being able to perfom their roles fully.
For those members who have recently presented medical notes to ask for exemptions, we apologise for any confusion caused but it is now clear that there are no exemptions. These members should not patrol with immediate effect unless they have a valid award that remains current and that they can fully perform.
Once any medical issue impacting patrolling is resolved it is the individual members responsibility to check that they are able to fully perfom their award(s) and then contact the club to advise they are fully fit again. At this point discussions can occur with the member regarding requalifying them. Once requalified the member can return to patrols.
Further to the above we ask that any members who have issues that would prevent them from performing the full scope of their patrolling award(s) make the club (including their patrol captain) aware of the issue immediately and then not patrol until that issue is resolved (unless they have another award they can fully operate under).
Patrols continue this weekend with Brookman and Clarko patrol on Saturday. Robson and Austin Patrol on Sunday.
Please remember if you can’t make your rostered patrol you need to arrange a substitute and advise your Patrol Captain.
Well done to everyone that raced on the weekend for Sorrento at the surf league. You did an amazing job for the club and we are so proud! Well done to the women's boat crew for making it into the A final at the Scarborough comp on Sunday, awesome effort.
Remember Sorrento athletes get free entry into the below comp for this weekend at Sorrento. Check out the flyer for full details. Get your entries into Jess on email@example.com by 4pm today.
It was a big weekend at the club and lots happening with some of our parents getting qualified as bronze holders, our club inservice for all our age managers and our first round of club champs.
Whilst we all can get caught up in what we are doing at the club some times there can be more pressing matters that need to be made a priority. Can I please remind everyone on the beach that if patrol vehicles eg club Ute, ATV or even a patrolling life saver needs to get through please assist by making the path clear for them. Just a gentle reminder for us all we are a lifesaving club first and foremost.
Thank you so much to our 50 plus age managers that gave up their valuable time on a Saturday morning to refresh and learn the fundamentals of board paddling, ocean swimming, sprints and flags. This will give you all the ability to pass on this knowledge to our nippers at our Sunday morning sessions.
A special thanks to all our coaches who demonstrated and explained the intricate details of their chosen disciplines . Bill Hughes on boards, Andrew Ridley with surf swimming, Aaron Bell sprints and Jeremy Plint flags. Brilliant work guys!
Round 1 Club Champs
I'm sure all our families would agree the set up for our first round club champs was absolutely top-notch. Ahuge thank you to the merry band of helpers that come down at the crack of dawn to have the sprint tracks laid out and arenas set up.
For the first time, I was able to go around and watch all the age groups competing and was inspired by how our young nippers compete with maximum effort, real guts and determination. Also not forgetting to show good sportsmanship once the race is done. Multiple times I witness pats on the back, hugs and hand shakes after races were finished. That is what competing the Sorrento way is about to keep up the great work nippers, age managers, and parents
This Saturday Paul Berry is running the NRC course which is an introductory level of water safety. All your senior age managers should of sent out information regarding the course and what candidates need to do to receive the award. Please let your senior age managers know you’ll be attending.
This Sunday is the first nippers carnival of the season being run at our very own beach by our very own members. Thank you in advance to all the people who will assist in making this event happen. Please parents if you see an opportunity to jump in and help don’t be shy.
With the carnival taking up the main beach U10 to U13 will not have a normal nippers session run this Sunday .The U6 to U9 groups will still be happening on the northern beach between the marina wall and groyne just look for your coloured flag on the morning.
On Sunday morning Parking will not be a problem we have been lucky enough to get the use of Sacred Heart oval for a gold coin donation you’ll be able to park hassle-free.
It will be a huge weekend at Sorrento good luck to all our athletes competing for weekend senior, youth and our nippers.
See you on the beach
