Chinese Students
On Saturday 30th November Sorrento SLSC hosted 16 Chinese students in activities run by Club Coaches Andrew and Carly Ridley with support from Nippers Niall and Amelie.

Jarrod Dwyer from Journey West bought the third delegation of Chinese Students to the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club to learn about beach safety, experience Australian culture and enjoy Sorrento hospitality with beach flags games.  The 16 students – aged between 10-12 years are in Australia for a week from the Wei’er Rd School, Jinan China.

Whilst in Australia they also visited the Pert Mint, Hillarys Marina and enjoy football activities at HBF Arena run by the WA Football Commission and West Perth Football Club.

Youth

Another excellent Sunday session on our magnificent beach. Our youth were everywhere with some assisting the U9’s whilst Golly (Senior Age Manager) is away, others running nippers groups as age managers, some on patrol, some on surf skis with the Youth Development Squad, some with the boaties trying out the surf boats, many providing water safety for nippers groups, whilst the rest were with the usual Sunday session and partook in boards/swim and flags. Fantastic turn out, with even more youth expected this weekend as exams and school terms end. Thanks to Greg Belmont, Dean Solly and Jeremy Stevens for running the various stations across the water and beach arenas.

Claire Rafferty and the Beachies
Of our 203 youth members, we have about 40 who are new to our club, and we had noticed some athletic talent amongst the ranks. The Sunday morning sessions are not high performance training times and thus we asked Claire and her team, which consisted of Amy, Tai, Sydney and Jarrad, to come over and have a look at some of the youth we had noted, to see if any were eligible for an invite to train with her elite group of beachies. And when I say elite, I mean the opportunity to train with the reigning world number one champion Jackson Symonds, as well as the rest of the group who have had success at state, national and international levels. The feedback we have received from Claire, is that the few youth we had identified were all good enough to join her training sessions. So, well done to the youth that Claire assessed on Sunday and please make sure you take up the offer to attend beachie training sessions as you are joining a very successful group of athletes, which our club is extremely proud of.

Boaties
Thank you to the team of boaties who volunteered to take out 4 of our youth last Sunday. As the conditions were a bit rough the boaties took the surf boat to Hillarys Harbour where the youth had an excellent opportunity to try out the boat and rowing. The boaties are always looking for more team members so please take advantage of the opportunity to try out this activity. Last Sunday I had to hold back a stampede of youth who were keen to have a go so thank you to the boaties for providing these Sunday morning sessions.

WA Surf League Competition
Congratulations to our youth that competed in this event last Saturday, in what can be considered challenging 15 to 20 knot winds and solid swells. The youth were able to gain invaluable experience in these conditions and performed superbly. Ella Packer was, again, a standout, coming 2nd in the open surf race, whilst Declan Cook and Daniel Snook showed strong improvements in the water events. Our beachies, as always, put in a magnificent performance and all results can be viewed on the SLSWA website as well as in our weekly youth newsletter, where they will be provided in full.

Youth Surf Ski Development Squad
With the 6 weeks of Saturday morning training sessions at Hillarys boat Harbour complete, the youth have now joined the usual Sunday morning sessions and were challenged with 15 knot breezes and a moderate swell which they coped with magnificently due to the excellent coaching they have received from Les and Leanne. Last Sunday Les utilised the conditions to provide additional coaching of invaluable wave surfing skills.

Club Swim
We are still looking for someone to take over the running of the club swim, preferably from the senior ranks of our club. At the moment youth is running the swim, but we need someone to ease our load and take over this duty. Please email me at
admin@jarot.com.au if you are available to basically organise a time keeper, 2 x scribes for the 200m and 400m swim times and then provide the results to the wonderful Jess for the club newsletter. The results for this week are as follows:

200m Club Swim Top 5
1.James Platel                        6.13
2.Grace Sputore                      6.24
3.Austin Leggo                        6.34
4.Matilda Lawton                     6.36
5.Reese Wingett                      6.40

400m Club Swim Top 5
1.Lucas Wilson                         5.03
2.David Armstrong                    5.32
3.Jay Solly                                5.40
4.Finn Van de Nadort                5.41
5.Georgie Overton                    5.42

Thank you to Suzanne O’Flynn (parent) for bringing up the rear and making sure all swimmers landed back on the beach as well as Jeremy Stevens (age manager) for providing water safety.

Volunteers
Youth are looking for volunteers to assist the age managers in running the Sunday morning activities and club swim. The various duties may involve things like putting out the flags for the beach activities, taking the times for the club swim, helping with the boards or other water activities or simply being an extra pair of hands where needed. Please email me or simply turn up on Sunday morning if you can help out in any way.

Youth Assistance with Golly’s U9’s Nippers Group
This Sunday and the next, Golly, the U9 Age Manager, is away and thus has asked if some youth (don’t have to be youth who compete, all youth are eligible) could head over to his group to help run the Sunday morning activities. This will involve beach and water activities as well as water safety and will provide youth with bonus YIP (Youth Incentive Programme) points.
I would also like to thank Sebastian Sayers (U14) for his assistance with Golly’s group as part of the team of youth who compete that went and ran training sessions a couple of Sundays ago for this group.

Youth Assistance at the Nippers Carnival U10 to U13 this Sunday
This Sunday Sorrento is hosting a U10 to U13 nippers carnival and Kieron Burke (Junior Director) has asked for 5 or 6 youth to assist with water safety and beach activities. If you are able to do this please email me so I can let Kieron know who he has. Again, YIP points will be provided for your voluntary services.

Down-winder for Surf Skis Postponed
The surf ski down-winder that was organised for this Wednesday, has had to be cancelled due to clashes with Callan’s board training, end of school activities as well as the fact that many of our youth are competing at Carnivals and this event would be right in the middle of the weekend competitions. The down-winder will occur, just not this week. Please keep up with posts on our face book pages to find out when the new date will be.

Youth Newsletter
If you would like to receive the weekly youth newsletter, then please send me your email address and I will add it to the contact list.

Youth Christmas Windup
Keep Sunday 22nd December free as that is the Sunday morning where all seniors (U14 and above) can partake in the traditional President’s Marathon (involves some swimming and running), which commences at around 9am. Youth will then head to our flag and participate in water and beach activities that may or may not involve large inflatable pool items, sponges, buckets, chocolate Santa’s, candy canes and some edible prizes.

Senior Carnival this Saturday at Secret Harbour
Good luck to all our youth who are competing at the Senior Carnival (U14 and over) this Saturday the 14th of December, at Secret Harbour.

Kylie Milne (Youth Liaison) and Chris Milne (Youth Development Director and Youth Surf Ski Coordinator)

Woodside Nippers

Mullaloo Development Carnival
Well done and congratulations to all the U/8 and U/9 that had a go at the first carnival on the weekend. I’ve been told by the senior age managers you were all brilliant and had a real crack. A huge thank you to our age managers and parents that chipped in at the carnival to make it run smoothly and fun for the athletes. Also the parents who loaded and unloaded the boards and tents your efforts are very much appreciated

Sorrento Sun Smart Nipper Carnival
This weekend Sorrento host the first official nippers Sun Smart Carnival for the season.
It will be a full on day at the club this Sunday so please allow extra time finding parking.
Normal nippers will be on for the U/6 through to U/9 all these groups will be run on the beach at the front of the club due to the carnival being run inside the SSE (Safe Swimming Enclosure)

Usual Nippers for U/10 through to U/13 will not go ahead due the carnival being run and giving us no space. Thank you for your understanding. Parents please step up in helping where you can, weather  its jumping in as an official or helping with set up and pack up or just providing support to the age managers. Many hands make light work.

I’m super excited to see all our competing nippers get stuck in and have a red hot go on our home deck and of course maintaining the great name Sorrento has of running a quality carnival for all clubs participating. With a high temperature forecast on Sunday please remember we are always promoting a sun smart attitude so make sure our athletes have plenty of water, sun cream, long sleeve top, a hat for marshalling, food and of course the club competition cap and their Woodside hi vis top. Please make sure the athletes are ok and well hydrated throughout the day and utilise the shaded areas.

All Training Session
Please remember all nippers need to sign on and off from training sessions. It is the parents and nippers responsibility to sign on and off the coaches do not have the time to chase up everyone.

If board training, please use the age group allocated boards your support in this matter is appreciated. Only a couple of weekends till we break for Christmas so let’s make them enjoyable and fun!

See you on the beach!

Junior Director
