A Dream Come True!

The Crown Hill Heritage Foundation is proud to announce in this month’s newsletter that Crown Hill has been recognized as a Level II Arboretum, a dream come true!

Crown Hill Arboretum Announced at Press Conference featuring Indianapolis Mayor Hogsett
On a windy, warm and sunny November 4th, with many trees still in their colorful autumn display, Crown Hill Heritage Foundation President David Rieck, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, and Arboretum Director Carrie Tauscher announced the establishment of the Crown Hill Arboretum, which was recently awarded a Level II Accreditation by ArbNet’s Arboretum Accreditation Program and The Morton Arboretum for achieving specific standards of professional practices deemed important for arboreta and botanical gardens.
“We are honored to have received this accreditation from ArbNet,” said Crown Hill President David Rieck. “The Crown Hill Arboretum is now the only accredited arboretum in Indianapolis and Central Indiana as well as one of only five Level II or higher-accredited arboreta in the state of Indiana. It is also the third-largest non-governmental cemetery arboretum in the country.”

Why Crown Hill became an Arboretum
Part of the mission of the Crown Hill Heritage Foundation is to preserve the natural heritage of the cemetery. A big part of that heritage is the landscape and the trees. Crown Hill is the largest canopy of trees inside the city of Indianapolis and provides many ecological benefits.

By becoming an accredited arboretum, we are being intentional in the care, conservation and enhancement of our tree collection. In addition to this, we are committed to the education and engagement around trees and our natural environment.

The Crown Hill Arboretum offers 555 acres of natural beauty, 25 miles of paved roads providing access to tree collections, and more than 10,000 trees representing more than 130 unique species.

What an Arboretum is and why they’re important
In its simplest form, an arboretum is a collection of trees and associated woody plants. As a Level II-accredited arboretum through ArbNet, the Crown Hill Arboretum has met or exceeded the following criteria:
  • An arborist on staff who ensures fulfillment of the arboretum plan and provides for the basic needs of the arboretum collection and functions of the arboretum.
  • A collection of more than 100 species, varieties or cultivars of trees or woody plants.
  • An arboretum plan and collections policy, describing the development and professional management of the plants in the arboretum collection.
