Dear Ones,
Last Sunday at Minnesota Valley UU Church in Bloomington, R.E. Coordinator Sara Sweeney read "The Rainbow Fish".  Here's Ernest Borgnine reading it aloud:  This story gently corrects one fallacy of supremacist thinking: "What's mine is mine... and the more I have, the better." How does the hoarding of shiny things -- the refusal to share abundance, the failure to see that the web is our wealth -- poison relationships with the earth and all its peoples? This hoarding mentality imbues so many kinds of injustice, including racism, anti-immigrant contempt, and  destruction of the earth and water. How do we teach ourselves and our children to give what's shiny and receive what is beyond price?

Please Save the Date!!

UU's & the Climate Strike: Convening Call on 9/11/2019

MUUSJA is thrilled to help launch the Minnesota UU Climate Justice Circle in this month of worldwide climate action. The 9/11 convening call will connect UU's across Minnesota sharing plans for events in September 2019, including the 9/20 Climate Strike.

AGENDA for Wednesday, September 11th,
Climate Justice Convening Call:

1. Reflections on September 5 UUA Climate Strike national call: What did you think of the national UUA call, if you participated?  FYI:  All the resources from the national call (September 5, 2019), including a transcript, video, PDF of slides, organizing resources, are available online at:

2. Report from the September 9th Regional UUA Climate Network Call -- current MN representatives are Mark Bohnhorst & Rita Chamblin -- we need another Minnesota "alternate" as a representative to this regional group (which meets online).

3. SEPTEMBER 15-17 CONFERENCE & LETTER-WRITING: Is anyone from your groups going to the Washington D.C. UU conference on "Climate Justice and the Green New Deal as a moral issue"?

4.   SEPTEMBER 20th: GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE rallies and events:

  • WHAT?:  In what way(s) are you & your local associates planning to show up for the 9/20 Climate Strike? Are you organizing other activities with UU's or other collaborators locally?
  • WHO are the "climate contacts" for your congregation or collaborators (name and phone or email)?
  • YOUTH LEADERS: The Global Climate Strike is a youth-led initiative. How have UU youth and families in your area been approached, consulted, and invited to join with planning and leading related events?
  • WHERE AND WHEN: Do you have a location & time set for your group to gather?
  • COMING TOGETHER?: For any UU groups who are planning to participate in the event in Saint Paul, if the MN UU Climate Justice Circle & MUUSJA can agree on a specific time/place to rendezvous, would you join us with your banners so that UU’s are visible as a bloc at the Capitol? Are there other events across Minnesota where UU's from different congregations might come together?

NOTE: If you personally or anyone from your congregation is participating in any actions or events on or around 9/20,  Please don’t forget to register for the Global Climate Strike:

5. OUTREACH, ACCESS, INCLUSION, VISIBILITY & PUBLICITY re Climate Crisis: How has your group considered doing outreach, access & inclusion of folks to add to “the usual suspects”? Any plans for social media or other publicity?

6. ITASCA/HEADWATERS EVENT: September 21-22: MNIPL Event: Protecting Our Sacred Water: A Gathering at the Headwaters - Rev. Karen Hutt from United Theological Seminary is included as one of the UU Voices in the Prayer Circle - Are folks from your congregations participating?

7. GICHI-GAMI (LAKE SUPERIOR) EVENT: September 28:  - How are folks participating in the Gichi-gami Gathering to Stop Line 3 (Nibi Gaa-bimaaji’iwemagak: Water Gives Life)?

8.  MOVING FORWARD: Sharing events to inspire others: Will you send photos & video clips of these events to the group that can be shared on social media? What follow-through plans does your group have for AFTER the Climate Strike? Will you be joining the letter-writing campaign from  "Write Here, Write Now"... UU's in Washington, DC will collect and hand-deliver your hand-written letters to Minnesota's Congressional legislators.

9. MN UU Climate Justice Circle - next call & plans - When would group leaders like to reconvene a call to debrief the climate strike & discuss new actions?
"Love is something when we give it away... We end up having more."

In faith and solidarity,
