BYRON BAY, NSW, AUSTRALIA AND LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, APRIL 7th, 2022 – New Canvas today announced that episode two of its ground-breaking, immersive series Lustration premieres on Meta’s Oculus TV this Friday, April 8th. Lustration is a multi-platform property, the VR series allows audiences to step into this animated world and be an active part of the experience. The fantasy, noir style story is set in the afterlife that is ultimately about the power of knowledge and how damaging misinformation can be to not only ourselves but also the communities that we live in.

The virtual reality-based series is the first new project released by XR studio New Canvas’ award-winning team since the studio was spun out of Start VR and was written and directed by leading First Nations creative Ryan Griffen. Lustration is based on Griffen’s graphic novel series of the same name and published by Gestalt Comics. Each episode is told from a different character’s perspective and can be experienced from different vantage points, allowing the audience to build their own picture of the characters, the world and ultimately the story.

Series Synopsis: Lustration is a 4 part multi-strand, animated series following a group of characters whose stories are mysteriously intertwined both in the real world and afterlife. As these characters’ stories unfold and intersect, we discover the lengths that some will go to in the name of love, while uncovering a conspiracy so vast it has affected every facet of our existence . . . and the next.

Episode 1: - “Gallus”

Two detectives, Bardolph and Gallus, who are ordered by the Cheribum to uphold peace and harmony in the ‘Between’ by removing ‘unwanted targets’ on a daily basis. When the two miss their mark it sets off a series of events that could change the after-life as we know it.

Episode 2: - “Pine”

Detective Pine is investigating a John Doe case who has left some confusing messages claiming to have uncovered a conspiracy that crosses from the living to the after-world. She quickly writes him and his conspiracy theories off as bonkers. Later as she is washing the dishes at her kitchen sink she is suddenly and inexplicably flung to the floor in agony.  Soon after, she realizes something isn’t right in her apartment.

The series was created entirely in the VR painting and animation app, Quill and marked the first time that Meta invested in a Quill project from an Australia-based company. Meta Quest commissioned Lustration VR for its Oculus TV platform, where the full season one of the series is available for viewing on Meta Quest VR headsets. Episode one dropped on Friday March 25th, 2022 and is currently available for viewing.
