The Quarterly Newsletter of Electric Utility Industry Sustainable Supply Chain Alliance • Summer 2019
• Message from the Chair
• September 25-26 Keynote Announced
• Welcome FirstEnergy
• Welcome to Our 2019 Supplier Affiliate Members
• Focus on Practice
• Calendar of Events

Hello Alliance members!  I’m sure for most of you it has been a busy winter and spring, and the year is flying by quickly.  Before we know it we will be networking and learning from each other at the September 25-27 Sustainable Sourcing Conference hosted by EUISSCA at the Doubletree Resort by Hilton, Paradise Valley – Scottsdale.

If you have been engaged on our many Team Calls and Member Practice Sharing Webinars you can feel the energy and passion companies are committing to sustainability and improving their footprint. It is exciting to hear the outcomes each month from the Utility Roundtable calls on Supplier Management and Cost Savings. The Supplier Affiliate Member Roundtable was very informative and it was outstanding to hear the innovative work the suppliers are implementing to help improve sustainability, not only for the products utilities purchase, but moving their needle towards their own company’s sustainability goal.

This is why we have come together at the Alliance, to collaborate and advance sustainable business and improve environmental performance. It is about learning from each other and addressing the challenges of creating a cleaner, more efficient and more sustainable supply chain.

I look forward to engaging with you on the upcoming calls as well as Face to Face in September at our Industry Luncheon with Supplier Affiliate Members and Utility Members.

Dave O’Brien, Chair

Utility Member Roundtable

The Alliance is currently hosting two Utility Roundtables: a Cost Savings Roundtable and a Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) Roundtable. Each of these groups meet once a month to discuss best sustainability practices on their respective topics.

Highlighted Case Study from Cost Savings Roundtable: Entergy saving money and reducing their environmental impacts through their Print Smart Campaign

Entergy worked with its strategic partner, Xerox, and recently moved to a managed print environment branded as the Print Smart Campaign. Prior to the campaign, Entergy had over 4,000 print devices company-wide and consumed over 126 million pages a year, which requires 18,000 trees to produce. Entergy’s Print Smart Campaign, a green initiative to efficiently deliver high-quality print services, was able to:

■  Save approximately $1-3 million annually by reducing the number of printers that must be maintained and supported

■  Improve efficiency by providing faster devices with more of the capabilities employees need (scan-2-e-mail, 2-sided print, secure print)

■  Contribute to environmental sustainability through “greener” printing practices (use of eco-friendly devices that use less power, require less space and fewer supplies, elimination of cover pages)

■  Entergy’s environmental impact by reducing the total print volume resulted in:

  • 258 tons of wood saved
  • Reduction of 1,855,008 gallons of waste water
  • 2,727 millions of BTUs reduced
  • Reduction of 511,259 lbs. of GHG Emissions

Upcoming Utility Roundtables

SRM Roundtable – Scorecards Discussion – Thursday, May 23, 2 - 3 pm ET

Supplier Affiliate Member Roundtable

The SAM Roundtable kicked off on March 26th with great success. Since this was our first time meeting, each of the 17 supplier attendees introduced themselves to the group and shared what sustainability topics they are interested sharing or learning about. Based on the topics flagged, our April Roundtable was focused on Vehicle Idling. Several Supplier Affiliate Members shared information on their vehicle idling plans and there was time for those on the call to ask questions and discuss vehicle idling as a group.

Upcoming Supplier Affiliate Member Roundtable
Our next SAM Roundtable call will be on May 28 from 1-2 pm ET when we will hear from Eaton on their zero waste effort and Intren on their fleet management program.  If you are a SAM please be sure to join us for this engaging and valuable session.

June Member & Supplier Affiliate Member Practice Sharing Session
June 18, 2019: 1 pm – 1:30 pm Central Time

Concrete repair often requires removing old concrete and pouring new concrete. Concrete is an energy and resource intensive product. Join us as PG&E shares how they helped improve the triple bottom line by piloting a process for in-place concrete repair, reducing the need for additional concrete, and in-turn reducing the cost. In addition, the work was completed by a diverse business enterprise.
