Hello friends,

In the lead up to Father’s Day, I thought I’d throw out a few endorsements inspired by the dearest, nearest fathers in my life...

My bro. Last week’s poetry recs were such a hit, that I decided to offer up three more. Endorsement #1 redux: read poetry! My big bro is a phenomenal papa, a poet, a professor, and the co-founder of Unrestricted Interest, which I’ve written about before. Here are his shout-outs, including one to his own wife:
  • I'm So Fine by Khadijah Queen (“witty woke prose poetry vignettes about celebrity, gender, and power”)
  • Someone Else's Wedding Vows by Bianca Stone (“a millennial mix of Mary Oliver and Sharon Olds”)
  • The Bridge by Mary Austin Speaker (“every time I've taught this book in one of my classes it is the favorite book of my students, no joke”)
My dad. No one is better at making you feel like the smartest, funniest person in the room like my dear old dad. His laugh and way of listening are legendary--a true embodiment of that Maya Angelou quotation: “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. People will never forget how you made them feel.” So endorsement #2, live as if it were all about leaving the people you interact with feeling seen. Their very cells will remember.

My dude. Speaking of what people remember, I have no doubt that one of my daughters’ most powerful memories of their childhood will be silly shit that my partner, John, has done. He gets in the bath with them fully clothed, jeans included, or in his swim goggles and cap. He wears Santa jammies in July. He makes a ear-splitting elephant noise every time he walks in the door. So endorsement #3, do the silly thing. Even if you are serious. Especially if you are serious.

Paternally grateful for Chris, Ron, and John,
Courtney

P.S. The keynote address I gave at the National Cohousing Conference is live if you want to check it out. I had such an incredible time there -- meeting some of the most visionary, committed communitarians you can imagine. It was sold out, with over 550 attendees from 124 communities, most states in the union, and eight countries!

P.P.S. I’m at the Spotlight Health conference next week in Aspen, Colorado, hosting one of my favorite evenings all year -- a night of fast-paced storytelling on global health and development from leaders in the Global South.
