Team E-quester places in the top 60 of the global XPRIZE Carbon Removal

Team E-quester, made up of Celine Xiao (MIE PhD candidate), Shijie Liu (MIE MASc candidate), former MIE postdoctoral fellow  Yi (Sheldon) Xu, Rui Kai (Ray) Miao (MIE PhD candidate) and Colin O’Brien (MIE PhD candidate), has placed among the Top 60 in the Milestone Round of the global XPRIZE Carbon Removal. The team is advised by Professors David Sinton (MIE) and Ted Sargent (ECE), MIE research associate Christine Gabardo, and alumnus Alex Ip (ECE PhD 1T5).

High-rise residential buildings are the fastest-growing form of housing in urban regions globally. These buildings already contribute significantly to carbon emissions globally, and they face serious performance challenges with our dramatically changing climate. From transmission of airborne containments to uneven ventilation and summertime overheating, various performance issues continue to plague this building type. Professor Marianne Touchie will explore these numerous performance issues associated with contemporary residential buildings, the new challenges anticipated in the future as our climate warms, and some novel approaches to reduce energy consumption and associated carbon emissions.
