Almost exactly 9 months ago, we packed up our computers, grabbed whatever files and folders we needed, said our tentative goodbyes to each other, and closed the physical doors to our studio for the foreseeable future. We scrambled to create a work-from-home strategy on the fly; we improvised workstations from our kitchens, bedrooms, and couches; we cursed our internet connections. Since then, the pandemic has surged, stabilized, and surged again, while centuries of social injustice and racial inequality boiled over and spilled out into the streets. We lost jobs and loved ones, and our favorite restaurants, bars, and watering holes - where we would typically be gathering to bond over all of the above are barely hanging on, or have sadly closed altogether.
But while it's been a dark and difficult year to look back upon, we are heartened by the glimmers of hope we see on the horizon as we look forward. Change won't happen overnight, but change is definitely in motion: new vaccines, new government, new priorities and perspectives. Through it all, we've managed to continue to create and to collaborate, which means there will always be a need for creativity, innovation, and hospitality - it just may look a little different in the future.
Despite this year's holiday celebrations being a bit smaller and quieter, we're celebrating all the ways we have been able to come together, whether virtually or at a distance, and we're celebrating the hope of new things to come.
We wish all of you the healthiest and happiest of holidays, and all the very best for a better, brighter 2021.
