Event Case Study - The Show Must Go On

Virgin money sponsored event in Newcastle, was this the first UK outdoor live music event following the social distancing protocol.

A venue set up from the 13th August – 13th September 2020, this outdoor venue will host several different outdoor performances from a range or artist on the live stage.

Virgin money sponsored event in Newcastle could be the UK’s first but this summer we saw some European countries attempting to find a solution and reduced risk to attendees for live entertainment following the protocol of Social Distancing.

Arts organisations in the UK received £1.57 billion rescue package from the UK government as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  To satisfy the audience appetite for live entertainment several venues have decided to host events.

From the 11th July and following social distancing protocol, venues such as the open-air opera at Glyndebourne will go ahead.  Cornwall’s Minack Theatre to go ahead and many other similar venues will open to the public.

The biggest test for outdoor live events in the UK, can the British public maintain social distancing requirements if they can monitor risk within their own personal space.  Evidence shows as was broadcasted after the government decided to lift restrictions for people to gather outdoors, as was seen in some pubs and outdoor spaces around the country.  It was reported by the police, the main accelerant for people to negate social distancing – alcohol.
