Fladbury Festive Five
Louise Bugg writes:
The 10th edition of the Fladbury Festive Five – 8th January 2023
Thankfully, the rain stopped just in time and 138 runners took part in the 5.5 mile Festive Five race which started at the greenhouses, headed down to the River Avon, along to Jubilee bridge and then back through Fladbury village.
This event is truly a team effort with so many of our community being involved in course marking, marshalling, organising teas and cakes. Yet again, we had many lovely comments from the runners who come from near and far to take part. They always comment about how friendly our race is and how fabulous the cakes are when they finish!
Thank you Fladbury – we did it again!
This year funds were raised for the Friends of Fladbury and for Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven.
Special thanks to Julie Cross (our Race Director without whom the race cannot go ahead).

River Avon
Water Quality Monitoring
Louise Bugg writes:
Last year the Girling Angling Society started monitoring the water quality after reports of fish disappearing in the stretch of water near Jubilee Bridge. In October, I started taking samples above the Mill, at the paddle club and in Evesham to expand the data collection.
The Environment Agency were contacted regarding concerns over the water quality and, at last, this month there will be a meeting of the Wychavon District Council Rural panel to discuss pollution issues on the Avon. Prior to this meeting, the Girling Angling Society, Andy Train and I have been invited by the local Parish Councillors to gather to discuss the data collected in preparation for the Wychavon meeting.
I have created a page on the Fladbury Village website to summarise the history and current situation - I will be keeping this updated as much as I am able.
https://www.fladburyvillage.co.uk/river-avon-water.../
Please do contact me if you are interested in coming out to do some sampling with me! louisejanebugg@gmail.com 07968 252847

Wanted by games café: does anyone have a spare Rummikub game they could donate or sell? It's our most popular game and a third set would be good.

Wychavon Parish Games 2023
It's the taking part that counts
Andy Train writes:
Fladbury needs you to take part in the Wychavon Parish Games!
The Games are an inter-parish competition (participants must live in the parish they compete for) and take place between June and late October/early November. The ethos is one of participation and friendly competition. You don't have to be an expert to take part ... knowing the rules helps but it's not essential!
Traditionally, Fladbury does very well in a few events but we don't manage to take part in all the events. Let's make 2023 our best year yet and cover all the events. I'm especially keen to hear from those who would be happy to captain a team. The captain's role is to recruit villagers to the team, make sure they turn up (!) and coordinate things along the way.
One Day Events:
- Saturday 24th June - Bell Boating (crew of 6)
- Sunday 2nd July - Rounders (squad of 9 to 15)
- Sunday 9th July - Men's 5-a-side Football (squad of 5 to 8)
- Monday 17th July - Cross Country (6 runners)
- Sunday 23rd July - Pétanque (2 players)
- Sunday 6th August - Bowls (4 players)
- Saturday 16th September - Angling (3 anglers)
- Sunday 8th October - Junior (2 players u18) and Senior Table Tennis (2 players)
Knock-Out Events: These are weekday evening (7.30pm starts) events. They take place in local pubs and clubs, with first round matches around late August/early September. Finals are usually concluded late October/early November. The events are:
- Crib (6 players)
- Women's Darts (5 players)
- Men's Darts (5 players)
- Dominoes (6 players)
- Pool (5 players)
- Skittles (10 players)
To do well overall, we really need to put teams out in every event. There are points just for taking part.
If you'd like to be a captain and/or take part, please contact Andy Train atrain1@btinternet.com, 07722125350.

The Five Villages Prom
Friday 10th March
Mark Blackwell writes:
Friday 10th March, 7.30pm at Fladbury Church
We are delighted to be able to reschedule this exciting event after it was suddenly cancelled for safety reasons due to a structural issue at Fladbury church.
The prom is expected to be a fabulous evening of music by Handel, Parry, Gershwin, Elgar and others performed by the talented musicians of Charlton, Cropthorne, Fladbury, Hill & Moor, Wyre Piddle, and beyond.
Come and enjoy old favourites and new discoveries at the Five Villages Prom!
Invite your family, friends and neighbours to join in with what promises to be a fun evening and enjoy participating with a rousing Land of Hope & Glory and Rule Britannia.
We hope you can come to this entertaining event which is raising monies for the Five Alive Parish and the charity, Evesham Vale welcomes Refugees.
Drinks will be available at the interval and after the performance. There will be a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses and residents.
You can buy tickets online on the Eventbrite website at https://fivevillagesprom.eventbrite.com. Or you can buy tickets, in person, at Fladbury Pie Shop. Or from Mark or Linda Blackwell directly by emailing markblackwell96@gmail.com.
If you are still holding a ticket bought in person, rather than online, for the original Prom date in October 2022, it is still valid and you do NOT need to buy another.

A Trip to Bath
Tuesday 18th April
Lisa Cole writes:
Hello Fladbury folk! I work as a part time tour manager/courier for travel companies. I have recently done a lot more work for Johnsons coach company, a local firm with a good reputation for being friendly and caring. I am aware that there are a few folk who would benefit from a day out without any worries about driving, parking and who would enjoy the company of others.
I am proposing to do a day trip to Bath after Easter on Tuesday 18th April. The coach would leave from the bus stop near the Social Club in Fladbury and return us there later in the day. There is a toilet on the coach and we can accommodate mobility aids. The cost would be between £25 and £30 depending on the number of persons interested. It will be open to Fladbury folk and their friends and relatives. If I can cut the cost further I will. If this is successful we can plan other outings, for example Chester, Llandudno, York or historical houses and heritage railways.
Let me know your thoughts. Either phone me on 07712 671131 or drop a note through my door in Broadway House, Broadway Lane.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Lisa.

Church Services & News
News
Fladbury Church Tower
You may have noticed the tower is free from scaffolding. You may also have seen the specialist stonemason working on the tower via rope access! The stonework has been inspected and the loose pinnacle and other stonework repaired. The top of the tower is complete. Phase two, to re-erect the scaffolding inside the belfry and replace a rotten timber is scheduled to begin in the week commencing 30th January. The clock will be stopped while work is carried out in the belfry.
Thank you to Fladbury Social Club for organising a raffle in aid of the tower repairs and thank you to everyone who took part in raising ✨£300✨. The estimated cost of repairs to the tower is £7k + the cost to replace the timber. Two grant applications have been made (maximum available from either is £1k), with outcomes due by end of March.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 22nd February, when there will be a service in church at 10am.
