DREAM GREEN
~ Earth Day Event Recap ~

Dream Green Earth Day event was a success! On April 24th, EarthLinks, Sun Valley Kitchen, and other community partners got together for a day of service and fun.

We had about 90 attendees visit the event throughout the day. Volunteers helped to pick up over 30 bags of trash from around the community and in Lakewood Gulch. Some volunteers were lucky enough to spot a beaver hanging out in the stream! In the afternoon, we enjoyed a tasty lunch prepared by Sun Valley Kitchen and Community Center. Kids loved getting their hands a little dirty while making wildflower seed bombs to take home. They also learned about recycling, trash, and compost while playing a sorting game.

We are so grateful to all of our volunteers, community partners, and staff for making Dream Green such a wonderful event. It was an amazing way to celebrate our Earth home and foster stewardship on a local level.

We Celebrate Alita!

Alita joined EL nearly two years ago, and said she immediately felt a sense of community. It became her “safe place,” so she convinced her husband, Daniel, to follow. They’ve become dependable assets to EL, participating in ArtCycle, Leadership Committee, Informed Trauma Care, and as one of the liaisons between Staff and Participants.

Before, Alita said she would sit at home, doing nothing and feeling sorry for herself. She went from cutting hair to taking a bad turn/path of self-destruction that she regrets. “EarthLinks has definitely changed me for the better.”  As an admitted “open book,” she says that EL was the first place where she felt accepted and seen; not judged - just a part of things.  “Simply having a place to go – especially during COVID, has been a life saver.”

Sadly, her world turned upside down when her uncle was tragically hit in his wheelchair and killed. They had been living with and caring for him; SO MUCH changed in an instant.  She and Dan immediately went straight to EL where prayers and hugs and tears flowed freely and Dan didn’t have to do all the “holding strong” by himself. She said she would not have survived that dark, heartbreaking time were it not for her friends and staff at EarthLinks. Staff immediately went into crisis mode for two solid weeks to secure new housing for them. Because of that support, they now have temporary housing, were able to keep her uncle’s dog AND, as of April 15, they celebrate 25 years of marriage, the BEST experience of Alita’s life!

A huge thank you to Alita, for your vulnerability, kindness, and wise words. And thank you to Kathryn, for facilitating this interview and segment.

Thank you for helping to cultivate the community here at EarthLinks.

Throughout the past year we've learned that although we may not always be together in person, the strength of this community goes beyond the walls of our garden. Empowerment, resilience, and collectivity grow from our rich soil, and we will learn from nature that we can survive even the harshest of winters.

The EarthLinks Community has faced unprecedented hurdles this past year. Your donation will ensure the well-being and empowerment of folks experiencing homelessness in your community.
