Even when the garden is dormant, it grounds us to our patch of Earth and weaves together hope and collectivity - reminding us even after weathering the harshest winters, we will bloom.

Humans of EarthLinks

By Kathryn Keyes
This month we celebrate Janis
Like so many of us, Janis, too is from Denver. She’s been with EarthLinks for five years and "loves everything!” The bees are a huge piece of her EL experience. As soon as she joined the community, she also became a part of Bee Club and likes to share her knowledge and skills with others.

She met a volunteer on the bus one day who told her of our program, and well, word of mouth is how many things begin! Looking back at her childhood, Janis realized how little things can sometimes “plant seeds” into our future. In second grade, her class did the proverbial “soaking beans and planting them on brown paper towels and setting them on the window sill,” and her bean was the only one that sprouted.

Some years later in 5th grade, she gathered a horse chestnut seed from City Park and planted it in her yard; now that tree is huge! The same thing happened with peach trees from seeds. In high school Janis was the editor of her school yearbook and really stretched her skill. She says, “maybe I should’ve been a writer.” Instead, she earned her BFA in Studio Art, which she laughingly admits comes into play when she arranges the food on her plate.

Janis enjoys numerous activities at EarthLinks, including the writing workshops and Trauma-Informed Practices trainings. She hopes we can add grief support as well. She loves the garden and the people here at EL, and often tells folks, “EarthLinks is a garden... and a lot more.” The dedication of the staff is infectious; for example, they provided care packages throughout COVID. She’s met some very special people here and appreciates their encouraging attitude and desire to "make this world better.” She wishes EL could become a model worldwide and has even applied to become a member of the Leadership Committee. A big thinker, Janis says “a nature trip to Mexico would be fun!”

**A huge thank you to Janis, for your vulnerability, kindness, and wise words. And thank you to Kathryn, for facilitating this interview and segment.**

Donations Wanted

EarthLinks is in need of donations! We are looking for:
  • Avocado pits to help us dye our market bags
  • Glass jars for our candles (these must be no larger than 11oz)
  • Newspaper for our worm bins and seedlings
Please drop them off at our store front, or send us an email for more information.

Feeling Thankful

Last week, we handed out over 90 Thanksgiving meals to members of our community. A special thanks goes out to all of our volunteers who helped to provide, package and deliver these meals.
We are so grateful for our nurturing grassroots community. EarthLinks is a place flourishing with bountiful organic produce, eight beehives, native flowers, an on-site composting system, and a year-round greenhouse. EarthLinks Program Participants are given a safe, peaceful space to foster empowerment, resilience, and collectivity while also sustaining the planet. Together, we care for each other and for Earth.
Schedule your Donation today
Did you know that about 70-80% of EarthLinks Program Participants find stable housing? Even the smallest donation can help us connect Participants with resources they need. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation so we can continue helping those who need it most.
