What's buzzing at EarthLinks?

As we continue to face the challenges of Winter in a pandemic, we also feel a deep sense of hope for the coming season and the returning of light. Follow along for some recent exciting updates from the EarthLinks Community.

It is Time to Say Farewell

Two of our staff members are parting ways to forge new paths and take on new adventures! We want to take this chance to celebrate all they have done for EarthLinks - for their contributions will resonate through this community for years to come.

Laura Schneiter, our Marketing and Events Director (she/her), had her last day with EarthLinks on January 15th, 2021. She served the EarthLinks community for over 5 years and is now moving on to face new challenges - we have no doubt she will go on to do incredible things. Laura's dedication to Participant involvement in events, fundraising campaigns, social media, and other communications has never wavered as she believes Participants should be wholly centered in the work we do. Beyond Laura's incredible contributions in her role, she also made lasting relationships within the Participant community - many Participants stopped by her office regularly just to chat with a friend and feel the vibrant warmth of her company! We will miss Laura deeply, however we wish her the best of luck and continued success in this next chapter of her life.

Alix Midgley, our Program and Garden Director (she/they), will be bidding us farewell on February 19th. Alix has been with EarthLinks around 2 years, and during that time has rooted herself into our community. She has had a profound impact on all of the human and plant lives here. Alix has created different avenues to include participants in decision making processes in the organization, including initiation of the Trauma Informed Care workgroup. They also started the cut flower CSA program and shifted the way that we source seeds, prioritizing seeds that are open pollinated, organic, regionally resilient, non-GMO and heirloom. Alix is leaving EarthLinks to pursue her dreams as a farmer. Serotiny Farms is located in the Four Corners region of Colorado near Mancos. Their mission is to bring beautiful, nourishing and diversified veggies, flowers and herbs directly to the community through regenerative agriculture, and to shepherd bioregional adapted seed for the next generation.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding either Laura or Alix's departure, please feel free to reach out to us via email at marketing@earthlinks-colorado.org.

Safe Outdoor Spaces (SOS) Update

Safe Outdoor Spaces are organized outdoor shelter alternatives for unhoused community members.
Our Safe Outdoor Space has been open since December 9th. Residents are provided with 3 meals per day, porta-potties, hand sinks, a smoking area, books, hot beverages and heated blankets. Employees take temperatures upon peoples’ arrival and departure each day and masks are required by everyone. Staff now has a trailer instead of a tent and residents are still making hand painted signs!

We have received positive feedback from healthcare providers and community members, and hope to continue this work. The SOS was recently inspected by all major City of Denver inspections, and passed with flying colors. The SOS continues to serve at full capacity, and the staff look forward to supporting the residents of the site for the next 5 months. It has been awe-inspiring to watch the incredible collaboration and group-effort between all of the partners, volunteers, staff, and community members to make this SOS possible.

If you want to help or get involved, we could use donations of hand and foot warmers, along with body wipes. Please email our executive director, cass@earthlinks-colorado.org for any questions.

And now for some wonderful news...

We are excited to announce that we will be re-opening Workshop Program on February 1st in a limited capacity fashion!

EarthLinks is deeply committed to the protection and safety of our community from the COVID-19 virus. We will be ensuring the safety of participants and staff by doing an A and B week cohort schedule for Participants to limit capacity, and staff will also be scheduled to reduce capacity on site. Temperatures will be taken upon arrival and leaving, 6-foot social distancing and mask wearing will be required at all times. We will also have a designated staff person per day for sanitization of frequently touched surfaces.
While we are so excited for our community to be back together again, we are taking things step-by-step. We will be observing COVID positivity rates and state guidelines along the way. We encourage everyone to wear your mask and keep practicing caution - there's a light at the end of the tunnel! Let's keep working together to get there.
We are hiring!

Thank you for helping to cultivate the community here at EarthLinks.

This year we've learned that although we may not always be together in person, the strength of this community goes beyond the walls of our garden. Empowerment, resilience, and collectivity grow from our rich soil, and we will learn from nature that we can survive even the harshest of winters.

The EarthLinks Community has faced unprecedented hurdles this past year. Your donation will ensure the well-being and empowerment of folks experiencing homelessness in your community.
