Beautiful Thing by Jonathan Harvey

Beautiful Thing by Jonathan Harvey tells the story of two working-class teenage boys who meet and fall in love in London in the 1990s. The two boys, Jaime and Ste, work to navigate their identities at school, at home, and when they are all alone. While many stories about LGBT love often rely on tragic, gut-wrenching, “forbidden” stories of coming out, this play features a positive, uplifting, downright beautiful storyline about gay life and identity. Despite being nearly 30 years old, I see this play as a fresh, hopeful take on LGBTQ+ life!

Love and Addiction by Stanton Peele and Archie Brodsky

Though this book’s many references to studies and “current society” are outdated as it was published in 1975, the focus is still worthy of looking into: human codependency on each other and any factor that alters our reality. By redefining and broadening the term “addiction,” the authors help us question stigmas, human behavior, and the roots of a need for an escape.
