GENERAL MESSAGE

COVID-19: When, where and how to get tested.

Unfortunately COVID-19 is still around us. If you have symptoms such as a cold, cough, fever or sudden loss of smell or taste, you cannot come to school. It is advised to get tested to see if you are infected with coronavirus. This will help us control the spread of the virus and protect one another.

You can make an appointment to get tested for COVID-19 in 2 ways: online or by phone.
  • Online: go to coronatest.nl. You will need your secure DigiD login details to access the site.
  • Phone: call 0800-1202. The number can be reached 7 days a week between 8:00 and 20:00.
Please note: if you do not have a DigiD, or if you want to schedule an appointment for a child, you will need to call the toll-free number 0800 1202 (or +31 850 659 063 if you're calling from a foreign phone) to make an appointment.
Go to government.nl for more information about testing.
  • Call your GP if you are experiencing severe shortness of breath or have a high fever, or if you are worried.
  • Always call 112 if the situation is life-threatening.

ISD PRIMARY: Message from Mr Sander Raaphorst

Our new school year has begun very well. After a lovely (and hot) summer break we are happy that the children are back in school again, of course, with the appropriate safety measures and guidelines in place. It is good to see our community working together to make the new situation around dropping off and picking up, as safe as possible.

For parents keeping distance from each other and from the school can be difficult sometimes. We aim to be a close and tight-knit international school and we will continue to look for opportunities for our ISD community to be in contact, online but hopefully more and more physical, throughout the year.

We look forward to the Primary information evening, in which we inform parents about the aims for this school year. The information evening will be a series of online sessions on Tuesday 22 September. The general session starts at 6pm. The links for the class information sessions will be sent out through social schools by the class teachers.

ISD PRIMARY: Learning about the body in PYP 4

Contribution by Mrs Lucy Doyle

In PYP 4 our first unit is about body systems. We started the unit by doing a KWL chart for finding out what the children know and what they want to know. To demonstrate their prior knowledge they pasted photos of internal organs onto an outline of their body, and labelled the ones they knew. The first body system we have inquired into is the skeletal system. The children learned about the different types of joints and then identified and labelled these joints in their bodies. Next they created a diagram of the skeleton by drawing on a photo of themselves, and found out some answers to their questions by using non-fiction books and the internet. Next week they will inquire into the muscular system - including running around! - and will put some questions to a medical doctor via video call.

Shooting for the stars – TU Delft special guest visits Year 6

Contribution by Mrs Miros Silva-ordaz

On Friday 14 September, Kartik Kumar, a PhD. student at the Faculty of Aerospace at TU Delft, came to visit the year 6 students and share his passion for space. The year 6 students are currently learning about the solar system and it was great to see their enthusiasm.

Kartik gave a quick course on what humans have done in space so far and what is currently going on in the space industry. He also shared some of his projects like the testing of space suits in Austria for usage on Mars in the near future. The PYP 6 class found his chat truly inspiring and they came up with really interesting questions for their inquiry learning like:
  • Why is the space dark?
  • What happens to all the junk in space?
  • How can you go to the toilet using the space suit?
  • What is radiation?
The children will keep working on their research in this inquiry journey and we want to thank Kartik for inspiring us to keep learning more about space.

ISD SECONDARY: Message from the director of Secondary, Mr Jaap Mos

The start of the year has been positive in every way! We welcomed 53 students, 35 of them are new to the secondary school. As of this year, we now have 31 nationalities represented in the school community.

Together with our students who joined us already last year, we
, as staff, see that the school now has come to a new stage of its development. The small family has now extended and that gives us pride. It is rewarding to observe how our students are settling in well, making new friends and getting used to new social and intellectual challenges ahead.

Meanwhile, we are also fully involved in the journey towards authorization for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP). This is a rigorous two-year process which we started already in spring 2019 and we aim to complete in spring 2021. As a result of the process, parents and students can be confident that ISD is held to the same high standards as other IB World Schools.

The process is going really well, and as part of it our IB consultant will do a -virtual- 2 day visit to the school next week. The visit includes lesson observations, meetings with all individual staff members, with students and with some parents as well. The whole process of authorization offers the school a very inspiring road map in our journey to become a leading international school.

We look forward to our start of the year information evening on Monday 21 September for which all parents have been invited. And beyond that, we look forward to another successful year for our students. Because that is what it’s all about!

ISD SECONDARY: Newcomer Day pictures

And then we were with 53… Newcomer day at ISD Secondary

On a beautiful sunny Wednesday morning, 2 September, we welcomed 35 new students to ISD secondary. From 9am onwards, we saw our newcomers arriving: some very excited and at ease, as they were meeting up with their former classmates from ISD primary, and some really nervous, as for them, the school was a completely new environment.

We started the day with a welcome word from the Leadership team, after which we divided the students into their mentor classes. While we finished the previous school year with 2 classes, there are now 5 classes of ISD secondary students! During mentor time the new students had the chance to get to know each other and their mentor a little bit better. It was great to hear all the enthusiastic stories of where students are coming from and what their hobbies and interests are. After a quick tour through the school building the programme continued with some typical ‘Dutch Games’: from ‘spijkerpoepen’ to ‘zaklopen’, a great way to get active and have some fun. In between activities students were taking over the lounge area, playing Uno, chess or just chatting. The newcomer day finished with the handing out of the famous ISD Secondary uniform: the blue ISD hoodie and the new MacBooks.

At the end of the morning, ISD newcomers became ISD students and with this the school grew from 18 students to 53 students. New groups and friendships will be formed, and we will see new dynamics and routines in the school building. We are looking forward to what the new school year will bring!

ISD SECONDARY: Launch after school Garden Club

We are happy to announce our first after school club, the Garden Club. Starting 24 September students are invited to join and work in the garden on the ISD secondary school grounds. We are looking forward to making our garden ready for planting and growing flowers and vegetable and planning for next season.
