Shooting for the stars – TU Delft special guest visits Year 6
Contribution by Mrs Miros Silva-ordaz
On Friday 14 September, Kartik Kumar, a PhD. student at the Faculty of Aerospace at TU Delft, came to visit the year 6 students and share his passion for space. The year 6 students are currently learning about the solar system and it was great to see their enthusiasm.
Kartik gave a quick course on what humans have done in space so far and what is currently going on in the space industry. He also shared some of his projects like the testing of space suits in Austria for usage on Mars in the near future. The PYP 6 class found his chat truly inspiring and they came up with really interesting questions for their inquiry learning like:
- Why is the space dark?

- What happens to all the junk in space?
- How can you go to the toilet using the space suit?
- What is radiation?
The children will keep working on their research in this inquiry journey and we want to thank Kartik for inspiring us to keep learning more about space.

ISD SECONDARY: Message from the director of Secondary, Mr Jaap Mos
The start of the year has been positive in every way! We welcomed 53 students, 35 of them are new to the secondary school. As of this year, we now have 31 nationalities represented in the school community.
Together with our students who joined us already last year, we, as staff, see that the school now has come to a new stage of its development. The small family has now extended and that gives us pride. It is rewarding to observe how our students are settling in well, making new friends and getting used to new social and intellectual challenges ahead.
Meanwhile, we are also fully involved in the journey towards authorization for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP). This is a rigorous two-year process which we started already in spring 2019 and we aim to complete in spring 2021. As a result of the process, parents and students can be confident that ISD is held to the same high standards as other IB World Schools.
The process is going really well, and as part of it our IB consultant will do a -virtual- 2 day visit to the school next week. The visit includes lesson observations, meetings with all individual staff members, with students and with some parents as well. The whole process of authorization offers the school a very inspiring road map in our journey to become a leading international school.
We look forward to our start of the year information evening on Monday 21 September for which all parents have been invited. And beyond that, we look forward to another successful year for our students. Because that is what it’s all about!

ISD SECONDARY: Newcomer Day pictures

And then we were with 53… Newcomer day at ISD Secondary
On a beautiful sunny Wednesday morning, 2 September, we welcomed 35 new students to ISD secondary. From 9am onwards, we saw our newcomers arriving: some very excited and at ease, as they were meeting up with their former classmates from ISD primary, and some really nervous, as for them, the school was a completely new environment.
We started the day with a welcome word from the Leadership team, after which we divided the students into their mentor classes. While we finished the previous school year with 2 classes, there are now 5 classes of ISD secondary students! During mentor time the new students had the chance to get to know each other and their mentor a little bit better. It was great to hear all the enthusiastic stories of where students are coming from and what their hobbies and interests are. After a quick tour through the school building the programme continued with some typical ‘Dutch Games’: from ‘spijkerpoepen’ to ‘zaklopen’, a great way to get active and have some fun. In between activities students were taking over the lounge area, playing Uno, chess or just chatting. The newcomer day finished with the handing out of the famous ISD Secondary uniform: the blue ISD hoodie and the new MacBooks.
At the end of the morning, ISD newcomers became ISD students and with this the school grew from 18 students to 53 students. New groups and friendships will be formed, and we will see new dynamics and routines in the school building. We are looking forward to what the new school year will bring!
