Hope and Welcome Corners E-News: Week of February 6, 2022

News from Pastor Kim

Greetings Friends!
This week we started a new series exploring what it means to have a Good Life. In this exploration we'll use Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. It's good to get our direction straight from the source!

As I watched season 1, episodes 3 (Jesus Loves the Little Children) and 4 (The Rock on Which It Was Built) of The Chosen, I noted that they included many of the themes that we saw in this week's message on Blessings and in the upcoming weeks' messages on Approval, Treasure, and Suffering. Our Wednesday discussion groups are open to newcomers and each episode stands on its own even though it's part of the series - kind of like books of the Bible! See the information below on how to join us.
Love God! Love Others! The End!
~Pastor Kim

You ~typically~ have three opportunities to worship with us each week:
9am Sunday - Welcome Corners: 3185 N M-43 Hwy, Hastings
11am Sunday - Hope: 2920 S M-37 Hwy, Hastings
Online - Facebook and YouTube: Hastings Hope UMC

"This is my prayer: that your love might become even more and more rich with knowledge and all kinds of insight. I pray this so that you will be able to decide what really matters and so you will be sincere and blameless on the day of Christ. I pray that you will then be filled with the fruit of righteousness, which comes from Jesus Christ, in order to give glory and praise to God."
Philippians 1:9-11 CEB

What defines a good life?
In this week's message, Pastor Kim looked at Mathew 5: 1-12
What incredible wisdom our Lord had, to know that we could not experience “the good life”
unless we understood the pain as well. It's in those moments that you feel at your absolute lowest that we really find out what our relationship with our Father is all about. Does it push us away from him, or does it bring us closer? Do we anger and question, or do we trust and continue with faith? Do we divide, or cooperate and recognize how blessed we are?

Wendy Elliott, Ministry Assistant

If the churches need to close in person worship due to weather we will advertise on WOODTV8 and on Facebook. There will still be online worship in some form.

During the week we will primarily advertise through Facebook and word of mouth. If the Hastings schools are closed due to weather, the church building will also be closed to all activities.
(Family Promise will make their own announcements regarding closure and won't necessarily follow this same guideline.)

As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe  yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord. Above all, clothe  yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Soup Luncheon to Support Family Promise of Barry County

Grace Lutheran Church, along with Thrivent Financial, is hosting a Winter Luncheon on Sunday, February 27, 2022. This meal will benefit the local chapter of Family Promise.  Pastor of Grace Lutheran, Ken Scheck, says, “We are thankful that Family Promise reaches out to those in need of shelter, especially families.  We look forward to continued work with the leadership of Family Promise.”

The community is invited to attend church at 10:45AM (Hope folks see information below on take-out/after church options.) and then stay for an all-homemade luncheon of soups, crackers and bread, fruit, desserts, and beverages. Suggested donation $8 for all you can eat. Guests may also arrive at noon to EAT-IN, please call and make a “reservation” to help in preparations.

If preferred, support can be given by a TAKE- OUT ONLY choice of homemade soups and crackers.  All proceeds, from the $5 suggested donation, will go to support Family Promise of Barry County. The take-out soups will be made by the Hastings Area School Culinary Arts Program, under the instruction of Justin Straub.  16 ounces of soups are   CREAMY POTATO (no meat)  and  CHICKEN VEGETABLE. Pick up between NOON and 1PM. Again, please call ahead to make your “reservation”.

Culinary Arts instructor, Justin Straube, shared his students’ ideas about the event. “The CTE  programs (Career Technology Education) at Hastings High School lead to teens learning different skills for jobs once they graduate. One example of this is the Culinary Arts Program which teaches students culinary skills for working and managing restaurants. The Culinary Arts Program is eager to help out with Family Promise event after a semester-full of learning. Through learning in the classroom and cooking in The Community Foundation kitchen, they are prepared and excited about this opportunity. The students in the Culinary Arts Program are thankful for the chance they’ve had to learn culinary skills and want to be able to give back to the community.”

Family Promise of Barry County partners with families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless by helping them get back on their feet so they can create a stable lifestyle for their children.   As stated on their website. “When we help parents meet their basic needs and give them the opportunity to create a vision for the future, their dreams of providing a better life for their children are realized. This changes our community and improves the lives of future generations.”

To support this project without purchasing soup, please visit the website

Grace Lutheran Church is located at 239 E North Street in Hastings.  To help in meal preparations, please make a “reservation” by Feb 20th  for EAT IN or TAKE-OUT.
