Hope and Welcome Corners E-News: Week of May 1, 2022

News from Pastor Kim

Greetings Friends!
Have you ever had a moment in time when you figuratively hit a wall? A time when taking another step forward just seems like an impossible task? Yes? Me, too. It's times like these that I'm most aware of the importance of my faith in God. A model for how to react in times of suffering can be found in Job chapter 7. Only a person of faith, who knows God, dares speak to God how Job does in chapter 7. Job provides a model for responding to suffering. Be honest. We must own our story, be willing to accept what we cannot control, and do the best we can with the rest.

On Sunday I attempted to model that behavior. I was honest with both congregations with what I've been up against the first four months of this year. I was also honest with what has carried me through: faith. The verse of the day, 2 Corinthians 12:9, on the Bible app was just what I needed to read. Paul had asked God to take away the thorn in his side and God responded by saying:  “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”  Paul then said: So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.

I, like Paul, will continue to be honest about weaknesses and the roadblocks that pop up so that when the time of trial is overcome I can give all glory to God. I pray that you will join me in this endeavor, that you will look to God first, be honest about your weaknesses, and give all glory to God when your perseverance is noted by others.

Looking forward to worshiping with you this week!
Love God! Love Others! The End!
~Pastor Kim

You ~typically~ have three opportunities to worship with us each week:
9am Sunday - Welcome Corners: 3185 N M-43 Hwy, Hastings
11am Sunday - Hope: 2920 S M-37 Hwy, Hastings
Online - Facebook and YouTube: Hastings Hope UMC

"This is my prayer: that your love might become even more and more rich with knowledge and all kinds of insight. I pray this so that you will be able to decide what really matters and so you will be sincere and blameless on the day of Christ. I pray that you will then be filled with the fruit of righteousness, which comes from Jesus Christ, in order to give glory and praise to God."
Philippians 1:9-11 CEB

May 1, 2022 ~ The Power of Giving - God's Not So Secret Agenda
I am currently co-leading a grief class. The folks are on a journey of great loss, depression, loneliness, and despair. Amid all this pain, a man told us the greatest joy he has right now, is serving others. Giving financially to his church, and helping others gives him joy. Amazing! He is suffering, and he doesn’t like the situation he is in, but because of his own pain he is able to see more clearly the needs of others and he is putting God first.

So, I ask myself, why is it that those of us not in pain often can’t see the needs around us? Do we need to experience the pain to wake up?
God first!

Pastor spoke from Haggai 1 on Sunday:  God, through Haggai, scolded the folks for living in paneled houses while the Lord’s house had fallen into disarray. It was also pointed out when people turned away from God, their needs were not met, but when they honored God, they prospered.
Being a faithful follower of God, is more than coming to church on Sunday. It’s living in God’s word and putting GOD FIRST.

God has given us so much!! Two beautiful churches, a large amount of property, a Pastor who loves her congregations and wonderful people.  Now is the time to glorify God and make sure these gifts don’t “fall into disarray.” GOD FIRST!!!!!

Have Blessed Week! - Wendy Elliott, Ministry Assistant

If you would like to give some of your first and best time to God by assisting our community members experiencing homelessness, we have several opportunities to volunteer in the Family Promise Day Center:

Now that our Lenten Challenge based on the following quote from St. Augustine has wrapped up, we need assistance distributing our extras that were placed under the Blessing Tree. If you would like to help drop me an email or a text or give me a call. ( 269.223.9944)

“Find out how much God has given you and from it take what you need; the remainder which you do not require is needed by others.  The extras of the rich are the necessities of the poor.  Those who retain what is superfluous possess the goods of others."

Jim Visser, who has previously performed at Hope, is now a part of the Sojourner Quartet. We are excited to welcome Jim back to Hope along with Mark, Larry, and Chris for what will be a wonderful morning of music on May 29!
We will be combining Hope's and Welcome Corners' worship services on this day.

As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe  yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord. Above all, clothe  yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:12-14,17 (NRSV)
