Local Innovation and Local Production for King County Kids

July, 2019

King County and the families who live here are fundamental to Look, Listen and Learn’s mission to inspire and advance early learning in young children of color. We innovate by applying childhood brain development knowledge, including insights coming from researchers right here in Washington state, to create children’s media that supports kids of color in developing the social, emotional, and cognitive skills to prepare for school.

Our inclusive, local focus extends to many facets of our work, from the venues that host our film segments to the local families that participate on our show. And our key collaborators—Best Starts for Kids, NxNW Digital Studio, Shunpike, and Thistle Theatre—are all rooted in Washington state.

Working locally to create innovative media not only helps tailor each episode to King County families, it also helps us make the most of our funds. TV production is expensive. For example, each hour-long episode of Sesame Street costs on average $600,000 to produce1. Our local focus enables us to produce a Look, Listen and Learn episode for a fraction of that amount (about $54,000 for each 30-minute show).

We are thankful to have great collaborators in our supportive production company NxNW Digital Studio and puppetry studio Thistle Theatre. These folks provide top-tier quality work at an affordable cost.  And we wouldn’t be underway without start up funding from King County’s Best Start for Kids.
Even so, we must continue to fundraise if we are to be able to produce a full season of Look, Listen and Learn. To help us reach our fundraising goals, we are currently seeking a Fund Development Specialist. Please find the job description here and feel free to share widely!

And, while we’re looking for the next member of the LLL team, remember it’s always possible for you to support us. Just click on the ‘Donate’ button on the Look, Listen and Learn home page to make a donation through our fiscal sponsor Shunpike.

Auditions Were a Success!

Over twenty families joined us at the Seattle Public Schools’ John Stanford Center for auditions on Saturday, June 22nd. With such an inspiring turnout from our community, we are excited to have met many talented kids to feature in upcoming episodes. For families who missed auditions and would like to participate, we would love to see your home-recorded video on our new segment "What'cha Think?"

More Episodes Coming this Summer

Our core team is hard at work writing scripts and preparing to produce more episodes this summer. We’ll explore arts and crafts, stories, cooking, and music at venues throughout King County. Make sure to catch new episodes by subscribing to our YouTube channel!

Thank you for all your support! Bye for now!
