Coach Spotlight

Meet Sue Andrews (pictured with one of the many WPFC players she's coached). Sue is currently the coach of the G14B team which her daughter, Juliette, plays in.  Sue originally began playing football back in 1975 and she had a flair for defence. This was at a time when football wasn’t considered a sport for girls. That didn’t stop Sue; she continued playing and after she hung up her boots, she grabbed the clipboard and carried on her love of football as a coach.

Sue has been coaching Juliette’s WPFC teams for 8 years, and had previously coached another WPFC team with her nephew, Brandon. She’s been a coach at WPFC for about 18 years. In total, Sue has coached football for around 30 years and is also a Head Teacher for PDHPE. Both at school and club level, Sue has brought a wealth of experience, knowledge and care to her coaching.

Sue was the Metropolitan Western Region Convenor and was responsible for picking representative players.  She has coached representative and Australian School Girls teams including at several of their overseas competitions.  Many of the players Sue has coached have gone on to represent Australia in the Matildas, including Joey Peters and Denie Pentecost.
Back when Sue started teaching football at school, there was only a boy’s Under 15 knockout competition for football.  Sue didn't agree with this, and so she successfully lobbied for a girl’s Under 15 knockout competition.  As a direct result of Sue’s initiative, and her passion and drive, the Girl’s Knockout Competition was established and still operates today in all public schools in NSW. The true definition of #GirlPower.

We are very lucky to have Sue as one of our coaches at WPFC.  I’m personally very grateful to Sue for her coaching style, heart, knowledge, passion, patience and drive.  I’m confident that my feelings are mirrored by all other parents and girls who’ve been fortunate enough to have her as their child’s coach.
Abby Denham-McQuillen (WPFC Girls Coordinator)
