MIKE'S BEER BEAT
New or notable, classic or quaffable, Mike is pouring a glass of it.

Beer: Kernza Pils
Variety: Pilsner
ABV: 5%
Brewer:  Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

Mike Sez: When you think of Dogfish Head beers, what may come to mind are hop-heavy ales such as the 60-Minute IPA and 90-Minute Imperial IPA, plus the incredible 120-Minute IPA at 15%-20% ABV. And, of course, the interesting extreme beers such as Raison D’Extra made with raisins and brown sugar.

This new beer, made in conjunction with Patagonia Provisions — an offshoot of the outdoor clothing company— is a German pilsner with an environmental twist. It’s made with a relatively new grain called Kernza. The grain, developed at The Land Institute is Salina, Kansas, is ecologically-friendly because it doesn’t need to be replanted each year. Such perennial crops protect soil from erosion and pull more carbon from the atmosphere.

Conclusion: Luckily, Kernza makes for a good beer, too. Dogfish Head also used organic hops and malt in making this crisp, tangy pilsner with a hint of nutty flavor. With those tasting notes, I’d recommend putting on side two of the Leftoverture album from Kansas and cue up “Magnum Opus,” which includes segments entitled “Father Padilla Meets the Perfect Gnat” and “Howling at the Moon.”
