Thanks Mr. Gates for an excellent concept!

The Week That Was: Summer + New Music Challenge

  • Monday, June 24: What happens when a rock music lover listens to new music? Jim and Patrick introduce their good friend, Greg Wilson, to some recent tunes by Hiss Golden Messenger and JD McPherson. Live from the Tiki Bar.
  • Tuesday, June 25: Rob Gates gets the new band treatment. Jim thinks Rob might like the Raconteurs. Patrick plays him some Dr. Dog. Greg and Kevin Spain join in the fun. Live from the Wilson Tiki Bar.
  • Wednesday, June 26: Our challenge to get classic rock lovers to listen to new music continues. Straight from Greg Wilson’s tiki bar, we play music by White Reaper and Sheer Mag for Kevin Spain. Thanks to the amazing Rob Gates for this great show concept.
  • Thursday, July 4: IT WAS THE FOURTH OF JULY. NO SHOW.
  • Friday, June 28: All Summer Long we'll be listening to summer music. Greg, Patrick, Jim, Rob and Kevin all toss summer songs into the ring and the results seem like the starting point for an awesome playlist. Dig it peoples!

Down In The Shacks Where The Satellite Dishes Grow

On Deck: Guest Host Week!

Nothing really lets Suburbs Pod listeners know it's the middle of summer like Guest Host Week. Jim and Patrick have earned a little time off (and when we say Jim and Patrick we really mean Jim).

But our amazing listeners — who are WAY smarter than we are — have our backs. Big thanks to everyone who stepped into the hosting role this week. We are more than grateful.

Mark yr calendars!
Mon July 8 - Steven Routledge talks about Neil Young’s Weld.
Tues July 9 - Randall Brown interviews Jeff Heiskell, formerly of Judybats
Wed July 10 -  Randall (of Quartjar fame) concludes an excellent interview.
Thurs July 11 - Jesse Jackson and Mike Kohli talk about Canadian bands.
Fri July 12 - Jesse Jackson and Kevin Clement talk about Louisiana music.

Wayback Machine: Rockin' the Cello

The guests have hosted before, of course, which is just one thing that makes our listeners so great. Here's a particular favorite: in episode 329, Minnesota’s very own BJ Bonin and pal Amy Waller talk cellos in popular music, and even give their non-cello ‘Perfect Pop’ selection. Hit the wayback button and jam on it now.

What We're Listening To:

And Now, the Section You've Been Waiting For: New Releases July 5!

Gas up the wagon and drive the whole clan down to Peaches for these hot platters.

DYGL - Songs of Innocence & Experience (Anniversary)
Tariffs haven't impacted the flow of music from east to west. So enjoy this second full-length album from Tokyo hipsters DYGL (pronounced "day-glo"). To our ears, they sound kinda like Arctic Monkeys mixed with the Libertines. And they previously have worked with the Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr., so their indie bonafides are strong. Now if we could just get them to stage a proper U.S. tour.

Jesca Hoop – Stonechild (Memphis Industries)
This California singer, now holed up in England, makes quiet music that speaks loudly. Her fifth album, filled with traditional folk instruments, features guest appearances by Lucius and Kate Stables.

Various Artists – Stranger Things 3 soundtrack (Legacy)
The bizarre goings-on of Hawkins IN in the 1980s are accompanied by the music of Howard Jones, Madonna, Foreigner, the Pointer Sisters, John Mellencamp, REO Speedwagon, Corey Hart, Huey Lewis and the News and more. The monsters aren’t the only thing that may give you chills.
