The Week That Was: Hop Along to Woodstock, John!

  • Monday July 29 - Patrick and Mr. Braddy Maylor's annual rite of summer 'twas the topic of Monday's episode: Road tripping to see Hop Along. Hop in the car and join 'em for a ride to Richmond.
  • Tuesday July 30 - Hey Hey it's Intern John! Get to know John Rossman, an invaluable part of the Suburbs Pod community. He's also a guitar slinger and legit rock and roller, peoples.
  • Wednesday July 31 -  Part One of a really fascinating (if we do say so ourselves) talk with Andy Zax, who had the job of overseeing the creation of a 38-CD box set to mark the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock.
  • Thursday August 1 - Part Two of the Andy talk. In this episode, we hear about the Velvet Underground, James Brown and Aretha Franklin. And yes, you are right, none of them were at Woodstock.
  • Friday August 2 - And the final piece of our interview with Andy Zax airs today. Please listen to all three parts, it's one of the most interesting interviews the Suburbs Pod crew has been lucky enough to be a part of. Thanks Andy!

Pete and Mike, earlier.

On Deck: New Music and R.E.M.

It's August, it's hot, it's miserable, so crank up your A.C. and turn up Suburbs Pod to eleven. Jim and Patrick will rock your stereo with new music picks and we follow up last week's three-part series with another trio of shows. This time it's a live event with author Robert Dean Lurie about his book, Begin the Begin: R.E.M.'s Early Years.

Put it on the August calendar right now!

Monday August 5 - Jim's new music picks for July.
Tuesday August 6 - New music + Patrick = great summertime combo.
Wednesday August 7 - Author Robert Dean Lurie: R.E.M. talk part one.
Thursday August 8 - Author Robert Dean Lurie: R.E.M. talk part two.
Friday August 9 - Author Robert Dean Lurie: R.E.M. talk part three.

Wayback Machine: It's so much more attractive inside the Moral Kiosk

Get all jacked up for our upcoming R.E.M. episodes by taking a pilgrimage back to episode 172, when Slicing Up Eyeballs website owner Matt Sebastian joined Jim, Patrick and crew for another ‘Best Songs’ episode. Bud Verge, Bob Popik and Rob Gates are on hand to talk about their passion for R.E.M.

What We're Listening To:

Hot, Fresh Platters: New Releases August 2!

Herd the whole clan into the mini-van and drive down to Peaches for new vinyl.

Berlin – Transcendance (Cleopatra)
Singer Terri Nunn has reunited with John Crawford and David Diamond to bring back new wave, old school-style.

Tyler Childers – Country Squire (RCA)
Modern day outlaw country. This 28-year-old Kentuckian makes his major label debut while at the same time fighting everything that is wrong with major-label country music.

Ty Segall – First Taste (Drag City)
Another week, another Ty Segall album. On this one, the guitar god lays down his electric ax in favor of synthesizers, mandolins and assorted other instruments. If that’s not you’re thing, don’t worry; Segall probably has a half-dozen other albums lined up in the queue.

Garry Tallent - More Like Me (D’Ville)
The E Street Band bassist releases his second solo album. It’s billed as an homage to mid-’60s rock and pop. So not too far off from a Springsteen show.

Various – Now That’s What I Call Yacht Rock (Sony)
We once interviewed an utmost authority on this subgenre on the pod (episode 164). He would likely quibble with some of the selections here (yacht rock is not simply another term for soft rock), but let’s be honest: When you’re on a boat, a little Climax Blues Band, Ace and Player will set your mind adrift.

Various – Woodstock - Back to the Garden: The Definitive 50th Anniversary Archive (Rhino)
Listen to our interview with producer Andy Zax and then go buy this 38-disc, 432-song box collection, “released” today. Oh wait, this limited-edition set sold out during preorder. If only you could crash the gates. (Also today, check out Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Live at Woodstock on the Concord label. Many people have forgotten that this then-white hot band played at the famous festival. Now you can hear the blistering 11-song performance.)

Volbeat – Rewind, Replay, Rebound (Republic)
Suburbs Pod regular Steven Routledge recently highlighted a new song by these Danish rockers. Now you can hear the full album, in all its fast, loud and melodic glory.

Yes – Yes 50 Live (Rhino)
Recorded last year in Philadelphia during the prog-rock band’s 50th anniversary tour, this set (available as 2 CDs or 4 LPs) features songs spanning the group’s career. Five decades: That’s a lot of noodling.
