New Unit Conference Call Recap
for June 16th
During our 6th New Unit call for 2020, we covered the following topics:
Eric Gemmell shared some best practices on using video conference technology to maintain contact with his Scout Troop during this period of social distancing. He talked about the need to avoid meetings becoming weekly lectures, but allowing the boys to interact on the screen, and include a form of entertainment a well, such as magic tricks or special guest presenters. He emphasized that the nature of the Troop meeting has changed from being largely skills based to more of maintaining contact and encouraging Scouting at home until things settle down and we can all get back to normal.
Next Council Commissioner Dick Kelly gave a report on how Council services are slowly opening up again but that restrictions on unit meetings and camping are still largely in place. Subsequent to our meeting, SDIC gave updated details on these topics which are attached here.
Then Amy Tadlock reminded us of the importance of building strong key 3 and direct contact leadership and committees at the beginning of new unit creation so that the youth are not left foundering without a well supported program. All of these points are covered in a clever video she created called “The Parable of the Tent”, which is linked here.
Finally, Bryce Hall gave an overview of a road-show presentation he has created that can be given to units or Round Table meetings to explain the benefits and requirements of the new Vanguard Religious wards program, which has replaced the previous program administered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called On My Honor. Please reach out to Bryce Hall or Trevor Bender to arrange a presentation for your unit.
Our next meeting will be on July 21st and will include an update of the Trek Guide 107, which details the requirements for both Cubs and Scouts BSA to earn the Mormon Battalion Trail High Adventure Award. See you then!
