Earlier this week we recognised the United Nations' International Day of Awareness of Food Loss & Waste. Led by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation, the day coincided with a number of events and new reports which provided insight into the progress being made globally.
The most notable of these was the Champions 12.3 update event, The Race to Halve Food Loss and Waste by 2030. Among the highlights were the release of the SDG Target 12.3 on Food Loss and Waste: 2021 Progress Report, and the announcement of the formation of the Champions 12.3 Assembly.

Congratulations to our PhD student Trang Nguyen, who won the University of Adelaide's 3 Minute Thesis competition earlier this month. She is now competing in the Asia-Pacific semi-finals - please vote for her in the People's Choice category!
We are pleased to see a new PhD opportunity become available through RMIT University. We also encourage any of our existing or potentially new industry participants interested in embedding a Fight Food Waste CRC Masters or PhD student into their organisation to work on Research & Development challenges to contact our CEO. PhDs will require matching funding of $100k over 4 years; Masters will require operational funding support from the company.
The Stop Food Waste Australia 2021-25 Strategic Plan was released this week to coincide with the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. The plan shows how we will work with industry, government and food rescue partners to help Australia achieve its goal of halving its food waste by 2030.
The official launch of the Australian Food Pact voluntary agreement will take place on 21 October. Details are currently being finalised for the event, which will feature Federal Minister for Agriculture, the Hon. Trevor Evans MP, SFWA Chief Operating Officer Mark Barthel, and a panel discussion featuring representatives from signatory organisations.
We welcome two new staff members to the Fight Food Waste CRC. Jonathan Middis joins us as the South Australian Innovation Manager. Jonathan has gained years of experience in new product development primarily across beverages, dairy and produce for global food multinationals to local start-ups.
Molly Chapman also joins us as TRANSFORM Deputy Program Leader. Molly has been in the waste-to-resource industry for 8+ years, working with agricultural, industrial food processing and municipal organic wastes, with strengths in recognising and developing both the technical and commercial opportunities for food waste.
