CAROL JAGO VIRTUAL EVENT

Join teacher, author, and NCTE past president Carol Jago and the ICTE for a special virtual event for ICTE members!

Teachers and students are living through an age of anxiety. For many, the stress has begun to interfere with our ability to read with pleasure and comprehension. Carol Jago will offer practical ideas for:

  • developing students’ digital reading skills

  • engaging students in reading tasks that matter to them

  • finding compelling, culturally relevant texts

  • navigating the gap from learning loss to learning gains

This virtual event is free for ICTE members, but registration is required. Registrants will have the opportunity to submit questions for Carol to answer during the event. Registration opens on January 11, 2021

Letters About Literature is a letter writing contest for students in Indiana in grades 4-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem or speech and write to the author (living or deceased) about how the book affected how they see themselves or how they see the world. Indiana students in grades 4-12 are eligible to enter the Indiana Letters About Literature reading and writing contest.

Deadline - January 11, 2021 – This is a great activity for remote learning!

Prizes in Indiana are awarded to the following winners in each level:

  • First Place: $100.00
  • Second Place: $50.00
  • Third Place: $25.00
  • Indiana Author Letters (Awarded to the highest scored letter written to an Indiana Author): $50.00
  • Teacher Prize: $150 (Awarded annually to a teacher who has gone the extra mile to support their students in entering our contest

There are three competition levels:

  • Level I: Grades 4-6
  • Level II: Grades 7 & 8
  • Level III: Grades 9-12

All Indiana winners will be announced in late March, 2021 and will receive an invitation to the virtual Awards Ceremony as well as a prize pack (including free books!) mailed to their home. All Indiana winning letters are published in a booklet that is distributed for free to the winning students.

LAL supports educational standards established for reading and language arts.

The 2020-21 Letters About Literature contest for young readers is made possible by the James and Madeleine McMullen Family Foundation and the Indiana State Library Foundation.

New this year: Because we are not using an online platform for this year’s contest, we no longer require parent permission for students under the age of 13 to simply enter the contest. Parent permission will be sought after winners are chosen. We hope that this will allow more teachers in grades 4-7 to submit class entries.

We are actively seeking teachers to create video, webinar, blog, and other multimedia content. We want to showcase the innovation and dedication of our Indiana teachers, and compensate them for their contributions. Through the GEER Grant, we have funding to pay teachers a generous fee for their submissions!
ILA (International Literacy Association)
We have some news to share. In the midst of uncertainty and advancing technological world, ILA has decided to cancel a traditional in person conference for 2021. They will continue to host various learning experiences virtually. You can keep up to date on these experiences by reading ISLA's monthly newsletter or by visiting ILA's website.

Literacy Today, ILA's bimonthly digital magazine for members, empowers and inspires educators in every stage of their career. Issues focus on hot topics in the field and how they relate to high-quality instruction, examine the latest literacy research, and share stories from our global literacy network.

The Future of Teacher Preparation, the November/December issue, is open access for both ILA members and nonmembers. Read now and share with colleagues.

Free for Everyone

ILA hosts free events that include conversations around timely topics and provide opportunities for attendees to learn from and engage with one another.

Respectfully,
Rachel Armstrong
