A Message from Susanna:

I am pleased to bring to our faculty a quarterly newsletter dedicated to the activities of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Toronto. As the DDD elect, I have had the privilege of mentorship in this role from both Gillian Hawker and Paul Dorian. I will transition to the full role of DDD in September, and will feature just some of Dr. Dorian’s contributions to our Division at that time.

As a very large Division across the 5 academic hospital sites, it has been challenging to hold a common vision of who we are, an issue that was noted by an external review of our Division conducted in 2017. An important purpose of this newsletter is to pass on information that I myself learn about the activities and amazing accomplishments of our faculty members. At this time, we are approximately 114 full time faculty, of which 20.5% are women. Clinician Teachers make up 43%, Clinician Investigators 23%, Clinician Scientists 28%: there are 3 Clinician Quality and Innovation investigators and 4 Clinician Administrators. It surprised me to learn that the Division of Cardiology has no faculty with the Clinician Educator job description.

I will try to bring you news from our educators and the research community, important dates and accomplishments. In the next issue, we will feature work from our program director Dr. Victoria Korley and the teachers that are working to implement the Competence-By-Design Program.

Enjoy the spring!

Dr. Susanna Mak
DDD Elect, Cardiology
