How must our culture adapt, be part of making a society that is responding to our changing present, and create a positive future?

Cultural Adaptations, co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme with match-funding from The Scottish Government, is a developing action-research project seeking to find creative, innovative and place-based responses to climate change impacts, equipping cultural organisations and cities with the knowledge and skills they need. has launched! A growing online resource, it will grow with the project and host ideas, articles, knowledge and practical toolkits to support:
  • Adaptation organisations such as local authorities, businesses and government agencies to engage the skills, knowledge and new perspectives of artists and creative practitioners.
  • Arts and cultural organisations to create and implement adaptation strategies to ensure their own sustainable future in a climate-changed world.

You are invited contribute ideas, comments and materials to help shape this developing resource and the toolkits by contacting the project office.

Cultural Adaptations Glasgow
Our Cultural Adaptations transnational workshops are key moments bringing together all of the country partnerships to share learning and contribute to the development of the resources and toolkit.

The first transnational workshop is taking place next week in Glasgow, Scotland: the ‘dear green place’ which played a central part in the development of the steam engine, and helped begin the industrial revolution of the 19th century.

Adaptation Strategies for Cultural Managers
2pm-5pm, Tuesday 19 March, Tramway

Over 20 Green Champions and managers of cultural organisations
 from the Glasgow City Region and nearby regions, are already registered to participate in this focused and practical workshop, preparing for climate change, and helping to shape future support and resources for the cultural sector. 

Green Tease: Cultural Adaptations
6pm-8pm. Monday 18 March, South Block

Artistic practitioners, sustainability professionals and those interested in building links between the arts and sustainability through the exchange of ideas, knowledge and practices can learn more about the project and meet local and international partners at this informal event with a glass of wine (or soft drink).

Glasgow Embedded Artist Announced
The Embedded Artist to work with Climate Ready Clyde and Creative Carbon Scotland as part of the Cultural Adaptations project has been announced. Writer and cultural producer Lesley Anne Rose is tasked with adding creativity into how the Glasgow City Region adapts to the impacts of climate change.

Ghent Embedded Artist Announced
The embedded artist for Ghent to work with the Environment and Climate Service of the City of Ghent and Greentrack Ghent has been announced. Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert will work together with the City of Ghent on the specific challenges - such as addressing the urban heat island effect - in implementing the Ghent Climate Adaptation Plan.

An innovative partnership
Cultural Adaptations brings together leading cultural organisations in Belgium, Ireland, Scotland and Sweden with innovative local adaptation partners. The project is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union with match-funding from Scottish GovernmentICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) will contribute to the dissemination work of the project outcomes and outputs.
