Resilient Leadership Update #11

I continue to hear from many churches who are successfully funding ministry during social distancing by taking a more intentional approach to online recurring giving. I want to share with you a success story in an 11-minute interview between Horizons SVP Don Smith, and Pastor Jacob Armstrong from Providence United Methodist Church in Mount Juliet, Tennessee.

Pastor Jacob shared a video (watch this three-minute video first) several weeks ago preparing his church for giving during social distancing. In the video, he provides an overview of the church's ongoing ministry, demonstrates how to use online giving, and invites viewers to choose to make their online giving automatically recurring. The result was an immediate increase in recurring giving from 40% of total giving to 56%. Pastor Jacob believes recurring giving is a major factor in the church seeing increased giving over last year despite the Coronavirus outbreak.

Pastors, as you prepare for your online worship offering talks this Sunday, keep in mind that while many in your churches are experiencing financial hardships due to the Coronavirus, most have been fortunate enough not to see their household incomes drop. In your offering talk, invite those whose stimulus checks are a financial windfall to consider donating them to help fund specific ministries in your church for those who are suffering. As part of your talk, be sure to have first shared a story of someone whose life has been positively impacted by your church's ministry.

With so many churches having received Paycheck Protection Program Loans and with more funding for this program in the works, it is critical that churches prepare to adhere to a strict set of guidelines in order to have all or part of this loan forgiven.

To help churches prepare for compliance with these requirements, we have scheduled a must-attend webinar with Stan Reiff, a CPA, Consulting Practice Lead, and Partner with CapinCrouse, the largest audit firm in the country that exclusively serves churches and faith-based nonprofit clients. Stan will share best practices related to the administration of PPP funds as well as strategies to maximize loan forgiveness.

How to Use SBA/PPP Loan Funds and Forgiveness Strategies

Now that you've received your PPP loan funds, you need to begin thinking about best practices related to the use of those funds to ensure you are maximizing strategies that will enable you to request and receive loan forgiveness. Stan Reiff, Consulting Practice Lead and Partner at CapinCrouse, the country's largest audit firm for churches and faith-based nonprofits, will offer practical ideas about how to account for the PPP loan funds, what kind of documentation you need to keep, why you need to employ the help of a professional CPA, and what you can expect related to the process surrounding loan forgiveness.

If you wait to implement best practices, you could end up having to pay back the entire loan amount instead of benefiting from loan forgiveness.

NEW! Interview with Jeff Watson

Earlier this week Joe Park sat down with Jeff Watson, a licensed attorney with years of experience in government-backed loans and the legislative process, to ask exactly this question. Watch the entire interview.

Jeff’s advice for churches, non-profits, and their 1099 employees is this: Continue to aggressively pursue the loan application process with your lenders so that your application is ready for submission when additional funds are approved. Jeff also discussed the difficulties some churches had in getting their loans approved and what they can do to increase their chances of approval if new funding is approved.

IMPORTANT! How to Optimize Your Church's Donation Page for Online Giving

Social distancing has highlighted the need for churches to revisit their approach to online and recurring giving. The correlation between high levels of recurring electronic giving and well-funded ministries has never been more clear. Unfortunately, most churches don’t realize their donation pages may be undermining their efforts to encourage online giving. Choosing the most effective design and format options can significantly impact your church’s ability to attract online gifts.

Joe Park and Richard Rogers, author of The E-Giving Guide For Every Church, outline eight practical ways to ensure your church is removing the friction to online and recurring giving opportunities during this time of social distancing.
