2019 Halifax District Council Election Opens March 4th 


Are you a member in the Halifax District? Vote in the 2019 Halifax District Council Election starting Monday, March 4th!

These six Halifax District candidates are seeking election to Council:
  • Brian Awad – McInnes Cooper
  • Cheryl Canning QC – Burchells LLP
  • Sheree Conlon QC – Stewart McKelvey
  • Deanna Frappier QC – Department of Justice (Canada)
  • Michelle Kelly – Cox & Palmer
  • Josie McKinney – Public Prosecution Service
Four of the six candidates will be elected to the 2019-2021 Council following the election period. We encourage you to learn more about these candidates offering their time, energy and talent to Council.  

Voting is conducted online and opens Monday, March 4th at 8:00 AM and closes Monday, March 18th at 5:00 PM.  Voting details including a link to the platform, username and password will be emailed to eligible voters by March 4th.

We recently reached out for feedback and asked you ‘should the Society consider a name change?’

To align us with our modern approach to regulation, Council brought the name change idea to the table at their November 2018 meeting where they considered renaming the Society to The Law Society of Nova Scotia.

Tuma T. W. Young Acclaimed as 2019-2020 Second Vice President


Tuma was called to the Bar in June 2001, becoming the first Mi’kmaq speaking lawyer in Nova Scotia. He was elected to Council as a Member At Large in 2015 and 2017 and is a member of the Code of Professional Conduct Committee, the Racial Equity Committee and the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Working Group.

At-Large Election Nominations Open March 19th 

The At-Large Election, the second phase of the Council election process, seeks a diversity of representation and aligns with our strategic goal to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in the legal profession and justice system. 

Nominations for the At-Large Election will be open from March 19 to April 1, 2019, with the election running from April 15 to April 22, 2019.

Trust Account Regulation Amendments & A Call for Your Feedback


At the January 2019 meeting, Council adopted several regulatory amendments relating to the operation of trust accounts by lawyers and law firms. We’re also seeking member feedback on the possibility of charging fees for certain services. Read more here
