Emily Chin, MD, FAAFP - MassAFP President
May 2022 President's Comments
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as the first woman of color in this role with the MassAFP and excited to continue to build on our work in promoting the speciality of Family Medicine. I am a Massachusetts native, born and raised on the North Shore. I am a graduate of Boston University, Tufts University School of Medicine and the Tufts FM Residency; I guess you could say I have a strong affiliation to this state!
Like many of you, the past few years have presented personal and professional challenges that have really forced me to think about what’s meaningful, achievable and worthwhile. It certainly highlighted the importance of family medicine and primary care to the health of our communities. In a highly matrixed, constantly evolving health system, family medicine needs to be at the table. Our chapter has been active in advocating on your behalf for primary care investment, value-based care, and telehealth parity. We will continue to support the physician - patient relationship in all medical decisions, inclusive of full reproductive rights.
We are looking to members to reach out and speak up, so that we can truly represent the diverse needs of our communities. Looking forward to a year of engagement and dialogue!
Sincerely,
Emily Chin, MD, FAAFP

May Legislative Update
FY23 Budget
The legislative budget process is underway at the State House. In April, the House of Representatives passed a $49.7 billion proposal for the fiscal year 2023 (FY23) budget. The House’s proposal contains $1.39 billion in additional spending over the Governor Baker’s proposal. The higher total price tag is largely due to MassHealth cost increases under the extension of the federal public health emergency.
