ANNOUNCEMENTS

UARIZONA WYANT COLLEGE OF OPTICAL SCIENCES ANNOUNCES NEWLY ESTABLISHED BAHRAM JALALI ENDOWED CHAIR IN OPTICAL SCIENCES

Announced by the college last week, Bahram Jalali, PhD; a pioneer of silicon photonics and a prolific inventor of record-setting imaging and sensing technologies and algorithms, has established an endowed chair in his name at the University of Arizona James C. Wyant College of Optical Sciences. Bahram wishes for his endowed chair to support faculty whose innovations and discoveries will further the global impact of optical technologies.

NEW YEAR | NEW BUILDING PROGRESS

It's hard not to notice the impressive size and height of the new Grand Challenges Research Building as the construction progress steadily moves forward. With a completion date in 2024, it will be open to the public before we know it! In the meantime, you can READ about the building progress and unique design of the GCRB and SEE pictures and videos from the progress here. Don't forget about the live webcams!

SUPPORT RECOVERY IN TURKEY & SYRIA

Earlier this week, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the countries of Syria and Turkey with devastating impact on their people. As a college of many international peoples, the Wyant College of Optical Sciences encourages support for the international recovery efforts underway. Please consider donations to any organization, with examples that you might consider including

WELCOME, ASSOCIATE RESEARCH PROFESSOR NI CHEN

Wyant College is pleased to welcome Associate Research Professor Ni Chen. Ni completed her Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering in 2014 at Seoul National University. Ni's research explores the interaction between light waves and objects, seeking general tools in computations that enable us to solve fundamental issues in existing 3D/4D optical imaging techniques.

STUDENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

TIANYAO ZHANG TAKES 3RD PLACE IN SPIE AR VR MR CHALLENGE

Congratulations are in order for Tianyao Zhang who took home third place in the SPIE Photonics West AR VR MR student optical design challenge competition. Yexin Pei and Gregory M. Nero also participated in the optical design challenge. Prof. Yuzuru Takashima advises the students and Prof. Yushi Kaneda co-advises the winner. Yuzuru said of the competition and his students' participation, "Tianyao, Greg, and Yexin participated the student optical design challenge competition at SPIE ARVRMR. All presented very well, and Tianyao got a prize!"

WYANT COLLEGE 2023-2024 SCHOLARSHIP PORTAL OPEN

Wyant College's 2023-2024 academic year departmental scholarships are now available for application.  The application deadline for all departmental scholarships is March 19, 2023, at 11:59pm.  If you will be an active student in a OSC undergraduate or graduate program next academic year (23-24), you are encouraged to apply! Questions? CELEBRATING UA ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR,
JOHN GREIVENKAMP

Every year, the University of Arizona salutes a group of alumni for their achievements, public service, advocacy for education, volunteerism and service to students, the colleges and the university. On February 3, 2023 campus leaders, alumni, family and friends gathered to celebrate Prof. John Greivenkamp's impact and contributions to the Wyant College of Optical Sciences. JUSTIN HYATT SCALES UP STARTUP WITH $1M GRANT

Congratulations to Wyant College alumnus, Justin Hyatt (PhD, 2019) and co-founders Roslyn Norman and Christian Davila, on securing an additional $1M SBIR grant from the National Science Foundation to build a full-scale commercial production line for their startup Paramium Technologies.

UARIZONA SUPERBOWL MEDIA OUTREACH EVENT

As the Superbowl approaches in Phoenix, AZ the Wyant College was invited to participate in a special VIP Media event hosted by UArizona. At the event volunteers demonstrated a few of the exciting outreach activities the college and students can share to teach about optics. Hillary Mathis, Jini Kandyil, Alex Carter, and Natzem Lima went to the event and enjoyed sharing their passion with attendees.

LASER FUN DAY: Mar. 25 | Volunteer or Learn more! An annual community outreach event led and organized by the Student Optics Chapter (SOCk), Laser Fun Day is a highly anticipated opportunity for youth and adults in the community to learn all about optics while having fun.
