Letter from the President’s Desk

Greetings NAWIC Sisters,

We are off and running into a New Year, and New Decade with a very busy schedule.  I want to highlight and encourage all of our members, along with their families, construction industry associates, and friends to participate with us to make these events a success for our community!

The First Kids Construction Expo & this year’s NAWIC Block Kids Competition will take place Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 10 am, at the Scottish Rite Event Center.   Please join us and sign your kids up for this “Free & Fun” event.   The Future Construction Leaders Foundation (FCLF) and NAWIC San Diego needs your support at this major event as we introduce children to construction industry careers at an early age (K -6th), hoping to create awareness and develop their interest in future careers in the industry.  As a reminder, this event is taking the place of our 2nd Saturday Meet Up!  For more information, to sign up for the Expo and Block Kids, or to sign up as a sponsor or volunteer, visit our website: https://www.futureconstructionleaders.org/block-kids-building-program

I am happy to announce that the Professional Development and Education Committee will be offering a
Resume Workshop February 29th, from 4p-6p at the San Diego Central Library.  I want to encourage members to capitalize on the partnership with Kate Boyle, Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW), and owner of Ambition Resumes, brought onboard for your benefit!

Our annual Women in Construction (WIC) Week will be March 1st – 7th!  We will have one major event, “Toast to the Trades” the evening of Friday, March 6th at 5:30 pm at the Dana on Mission Bay in the Ballroom!  There will be various other smaller events for member involvement throughout the week promoting construction industry awareness for women.   Please be reminded, the Toast to the Trades dinner will be taking the place of our General Membership Meeting for March.

As the San Diego Chapter Sponsor of the NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF) Design Drafting Competition for High School students, judging is taking place the morning of March 6, 2020.  The local winning entry will be submitted for Regional and National Competition!  This competition provides recognition to contestants for creative design, successful problem solving and craftsmanship in preparing architectural drawings and renderings.  These students will also enjoy a site visit/tour to the New School of Architecture & Design on February 7, 2020!

I hope to see you all soon, as we continue “Towering Towards our Future” at the Riverwalk Golf Course location for the February 11th Joint NAWICSD #21 & ASPE #4 San Diego Chapters membership meeting.  We will hear from a panel of Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) experts from member company Gafcon, Sundt and Balfour Beatty. The panelists will share their insight and experience on Building Beyond BIM: How Technology is Advancing Construction Practices.

Cheers to Women in Construction,
