Letter from the President’s Desk

Greetings NAWIC Sisters,

Happy New Year! Hope you are looking forward to all that 2020 has in store for NAWIC Chapter 21 and women in construction!

Thank you all so much for your participation and donations this past Holiday Season to the food drive for the San Diego Food Bank, the Steam Maker Festival at the San Diego County Fairgrounds, the signing Christmas cards for the troops, and supporting Rachel’s Women’s Center!  Wow…You made a difference in these community outreach efforts being a success for their clients, the students, our military and women in need.  Great Job!

Our fundraising efforts for Design Drafting and Scholarship are ongoing.  So please continue to show your support for NAWIC San Diego Chapter 21 and the Future Construction Leaders Foundation.  The Design Drafting Committee held a really fun Escape Room Adventure Fundraiser and Silent Auction; the Scholarship Committee has Tickets for the Trades Fundraiser through January 14th. The winner will be picked at our General Membership Meeting for a trip to Disneyland.  The First Kids Construction Expo is coming your way with NAWIC Block Kids Competition on Saturday, February 8th at the Scottish Rite Event Center.  These are the reasons why it is so important that we continue to introduce our youth and teens to the opportunities our industry has to offer.  Thanks also to the generosity of our sponsors for their continued support of our programs.

Our next NAWIC 2nd Saturday Member +1 Mixer will be January 11th at the Coronado Brewing Company in Imperial Beach!  Please join us for the “Free & Informal” event.  Come socialize and connect with your NAWIC Sisters.  Bring a co-worker, client, or industry friend and learn more about our organization and the wonderful women who are part of it, and how you can contribute too!

I hope to see you all soon, as we continue “Towering Towards our Future” at the Riverwalk Golf Course location for the January 14th membership meeting.

Cheers to Women in Construction,

Kimberly Bell

Kids Construction Expo & NAWIC Block Kids Competition

The First KIDS’ CONSTRUCTION EXPO is coming your way – Saturday morning, February 8th, 2020 at the Scottish Rite Event Center. This is a FREE family event. There will be interactive displays in electrical, plumbing, sheet metal, carpentry, design, and heavy equipment. As the kids enter our expo, each will be given a toy hard hat with the mission of visiting each booth to obtain and add stickers to their hard hat. During the expo, for children grades K – 6th who wish to participate (and sign up ahead of time), we will have our Block Kids competition. This program challenges kids to use their imagination in constructing a structure or project using interlocking blocks. By introducing children to construction industry careers at an early age, we are hoping to create awareness and develop their interest in future careers in the industry.

For more information, to sign up for the Expo and Block Kids, or to sign up as a sponsor or volunteer, visit our website: https://www.futureconstructionleaders.org/block-kids-building-program

This is going to be a major event for our chapter and foundation – we need your support. Please consider donating or ask your company if they would like to sponsor. We will also be accepting in kind donations – specifically we need safety vests for the block kids judges – please reach out to me (KimberlyBell at kbell@pulice.com
or 619.753.5605if you are able to donate 25 vests.

2019-20 Design Drafting Competition Sponsorships

The National Association of Women in Construction— San Diego #21 is sponsoring the NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF) Design Drafting Competition for High School and College students.
The competition provides recognition to contestants for creative design, successful problem solving and craftsmanship in preparing architectural drawings and renderings. The drawings may be created utiliz-ing any computer aided design (CAD) program available to the contestants, drawn by hand, or may consist of a combination of computer aided and hand drawn plans. Entries will be evaluated for detail, accuracy and originality of work.

Contestants will be judged at the local level with the local winning entry in each division being sub-mitted for Regional and National Competition. Contestants will be furnished with an architectural problem developed by a
design professional, a site description and plan, and a list of required drawings and infor-mation. Judging will be performed by construction industry professionals. Future Construction Leaders Foundation believes the challenge of meeting future workforce demands emphasizes the importance of education, training, and preparing our youth for careers in construction.

Won’t you please join us in sponsoring this motivational competition?
