Healthwise in Brief - Upcoming events and news

New Healthwise Pilates Class 
Pilates is an exercise that focuses on stretching and strengthening the whole body to improve muscle strength, balance, flexibility and posture. It was created by German-born Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s and incorporates elements of yoga, martial arts and Western forms of exercise.
Core stability is a loose term for the muscles surrounding the spine and stomach region and is of particular importance to help improve posture and key to performing everyday tasks effectively. Improving core stability is of particular interest to people living with non-specific lower back pain or a muscular imbalance that is causing referred pain to another part of the body. Pilates is an excellent activity to help recruit these core stabilising muscles and improve the strength within this region. As a gentle, low-impact form of exercise suitable for all ages, injuries are uncommon when the exercises are performed correctly.
The Healthwise programme has just begun a new Pilates session, this class is delivered by Jo White, a Level 3 Pilates instructor who has been delivering classes to York residents for the past 10 years. Classes take place at the Energise gym on Thursday mornings, priced at £4 on a pay-as-you-go basis. Please call Jason Minto on 01904 403917 or email for further information about this activity.
Falls Prevention Classes
Following a short lapse in the provision of the Healthwise fall services, the postural stability instructor/falls class has now been rebooted with a new revised programme. This fits within the Healthwise referral pathways alongside other specialist classes such as cardiac rehabilitation, COPD, neurological conditions and cancer

Participants for this particular class can continue to have access for as long as they feel they are benefiting, rather than just for a set period of time. We will also look towards starting new classes where there is demand. Healthwise are aware that there is a lack of provision in some of the outlying villages such as Haxby, Wigginton and Dunnington. As part of the Healthwise pathway we can also help participants to access other appropriate activities within Healthwise and the wider community. 
Healthwise falls prevention class is on a Thursday morning at the Energise Leisure Centre.
Acceptance criteria – fear of falling, feeling unstable, history of falls (injurious and non-injurious) low bone density or family history of osteoporotic fracture.
Classes cost £4 per session, which also aligns with other Healthwise classes. Please make patients aware of this when referring them on the Healthwise programme in particular to the Pilates and Falls Prevention classes.
