Zarah Sultana - Standing up for Coventry South

Dear Friend,

In this newsletter, you will find:
  1. Working for Coventry
  2. In Parliament
  3. Social Justice
  4. Video of the month - "Among Them" Podcast
(1) Working for Coventry

It has felt so good to return to doorstep and in-person visits this month. I started by inviting hundreds of constituents to get in touch with me about their concerns with developments in Earlsdon. In a similar vein, I arranged for a senior team from HS2 to meet on site to hear concerns from constituents who live nearby to the train tracks.

May also marks the start of Coventry UK City of Culture 2021. I joined projects that empower women through arts and visited some of our proudest community centres - the West Indian Community Centre and Social Club - and youth organisations - Positive Youth Foundation - with plans to become stronger than ever despite their already rich history.

(2) In Parliament

Questioning Cummings
It is a huge honour and privilege to represent Coventry South in Parliament. On Wednesday 26 May, I had the opportunity to question Dominic Cummings, former chief adviser to the Prime Minister, when he was called to testify in front of the Science and Technology Select Committee.

I asked Dominic Cummings if there should be a full public inquiry now – and why the Prime Minister is refusing to meet with the bereaved families seeking justice. You can watch my questions and his revealing answers here.

A Green New Deal that works for all
This month, Parliament presented an opportunity that I took to try to make the changes that you all want to see. That's why I put down an amendment to the Queen's Speech for a "People's Green New Deal". You can watch my speech in favour of this amendment here.

This is a state-led plan to transform the economy and avert climate crisis. It means investing in green technology and public transport at a scale that matches our ambitions and need for jobs, sustainable housing and growth.

Corporation Tax
On 24 May, I voted in favour of a global minimum corporation tax - a plan that would stop big businesses like Amazon from dodging billions of pounds worth of tax.
HS2 is threatening our lovely countryside.
(3) Social Justice

"Our freedom", the great Nelson Mandela said, "is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians". I was proud to echo these powerful words at a 150,000-person march in London two weeks ago. Before then, I had written to the Foreign Secretary on behalf of hundreds of constituents of Coventry South. Protests and actions have continued to take place with growing numbers every weekend across the country.

I have sent my solidarity or joined in regularly in Coventry and at national demonstrations London (pictured above). You can watch my latest speech to demonstrators here. On 26 May, I confronted the Prime Minister at PMQs about violence that suggests that Palestinian children were killed with British-made weapons. My question - which he ran away from - can be watched here.
My campaign for football reform and 50+1% supporter control of clubs continues. I've teamed up with We Own It to launch a public petition to MPs to return power to the fans and spoke in Parliament on the issue.
(4) Video of the month - "Among Them" Podcast
Positive Youth Foundation does extraordinary work to give young people in Coventry opportunities and a safe space to play and grow. I was honoured to appear as a guest on their podcast "Among Them".

Thank you for your ongoing support!
