Recent advances in several key areas (RES, energy storage, electric vehicles) allow significant GHG cuts but are not sufficient to reach deep decarbonisation consistent with the Paris Agreement, as recognised by IEA in its technology assessments and various modelling studies by both EU institutions and independent researchers. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) deployment may reduce industrial emissions, provide low-carbon industrial heat and improve the security of electricity supply by complementing short-term energy storage. However, its large-scale implementation requires a long-term policy framework.
The ‘Building momentum for the long-term CCS deployment in the CEE region’ project, conducted by WiseEuropa, Energy Policy Group, Institute for European Integration, Civitta Latvija and Bellona Foundation under the EEA and Norway Grants Fund for Regional Cooperation, aims to renew the discussion on long-term deployment of CCS technologies in the CEE region, leading to the new policies and joint projects. It is expected that building evidence-based consensus among key stakeholders will pave the way to implement concrete policies and ventures.
During the second phase of the project, project partners prepared national policy roadmaps for CCS deployment for the following countries: Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine. We would like to kindly invite you to our seminar presenting the final CCS Roadmap discussing potential key steps for CCS deployment in Slovenia and the region of Central and Eastern Europe.
In the course of the seminar, we focus, in particular, on the following issues:
• The current status of CCS developments in Slovenia (and elsewhere in the Central and Eastern European region)
• Key governance, social and economic barriers and how to overcome them
• Good practices and plans for CCS development
Additionally, our guest speakers will present ongoing industrial decarbonisation plans using CCS technologies, as well as offer insight into stakeholder engagement and how to impact EU level policy in order to accelerate CCS deployment in the region.
