There are many misperceptions about abuse in later life: what it is, who does it impact, where is it likely to occur.  This presentation will look first at how abuse in later life is defined, what factors may increase the risk of abuse and how we can collaborate to support the safety and healing of the older adult experiencing abuse.  This presentation will also include a look at the varied resources available to professionals in their effort to support older adults experiencing abuse.  The National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life has a video library, resource library and other tools to guide professionals in these efforts. 

Geared toward forensic nurses, advanced practice providers and emergency department/healthcare providers.

MARTIE WASHINGTON
Abuse in Later Life Program Coordinator

Martie Washington is the Abuse in Later Life Program Coordinator at the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life (NCALL), an initiative of End Abuse Wisonsin.  In this role, Washington is responsible for overall coordination of training and technical assistance activities for the Office on Violence Against Women’s Abuse in Later Life Grant Program recipients.  She provides training to OVW grantees and other entities in the abuse in later life field, as well as work on special projects. 

Martie has an extensive background in case management, grant development and management, public/behavioral health, and collaborative team development. Inter-agency teams developed and supported by Washington’s technical assistance focus on topics including elder abuse, drug endangered children, domestic violence and sexual violence.  She was a social worker in a long-term care facility, working with older adults in the development of advance directives and psychosocial assessment.

Martie has developed and delivered multiple trainings both in-person and virtually addressing collaborative approaches and alliance development.  She graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and has worked in the social services field in one capacity or another for 40 years.  Washington currently lives and works in Nevada.
