December 2020

Welcome to the first CDB DEI Quarterly Newsletter
Introducing the CDB DEI Newsletter: Welcome to the first edition of the CDB newsletter on diversity, equity, and inclusion. This quarterly newsletter will provide a summary of CDB activities in the last quarter, notice of upcoming events, and links to useful resources.

Highlights from the CDB DEI Ad Hoc Working Group:  This summer, a working group of CDB trainees, staff, and faculty conducted a comprehensive review of our department in terms of climate, diversity, equity, and inclusion. We owe a huge thank you to working group members for all of their generous effort and ideas. Based on the recommendations of this group, CDB designed a multi-year plan to address key areas that would have a large impact on the success of our research and educational missions.

Activities in the last quarter:
Building on the recommendations of the Ad hoc working group, CDB has implemented several changes including changes to provide faculty tools to more broadly advertise open positions in their labs, which are summarized in a document here, and changes to increase transparency, which include this newsletter and mechanisms to communicate CDB committee structures to all members of the department through the departmental intranet. Finally, CDB faculty voted to approve an action list for FY2021 of concrete actions to continue to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Opportunities:
During this holiday season and beyond, we can help small businesses by making our purchases from women and minority-owned businesses. The UM Strategic Vendor site and Washtenaw County provide lists of Minority or Women-Owned Businesses.

Resources:
Want to learn more or be a better ally? Michigan Medicine OHEI events and education opportunities and UM Organizational Learning provide a variety of self-paced online training, and a suite of courses available at no cost.  The Washtenaw United Way provides resources for self-guided learning for individuals and teams.
Planning to hire new staff or postdoctoral trainees?
CDB has prepared a document with best practices for inclusive hiring of staff and postdocs.

Upcoming holidays and celebrations:
The upcoming quarter will see celebrations of Martin Luther King Day (Jan 18) and Transgender visibility day (March 31) as well as Black History Month (February) and Women’s History Month (March).
