Newsletter Spring 2021

Blossom by blossom the Spring begins! As the days begin to lengthen, the season of spinach is approaching. We would like to share some fun facts about this popular product!  This time, parsnip will be our product in the picture!
New season: Spinach

Most people only know spinach as an iron-rich vegetable, but it is packed with other minerals and vitamins, which makes it real superfood!

Spinach contains more iron (3-4 mg) than many other vegetables, but the iron content of spinach has long been overrated (partly thanks to Popeye).
Because chemist Erich von Wolf misplaced the decimal in his research in 1870, a serving of 100g of spinach did not get the right 3.5 milligrams of iron, but 35 milligrams. Oopsie!
Sustainable farming

The emphasis is on the growth of a healthy crop, whereby agricultural ecosystems are disturbed as little as possible and  natural pest control is encouraged!

  • It all starts with the right variety choice. Therefore, the  seeds for the crops are purchased by Pasfrost.
  • We are looking for growers with a certain vision, appearance and with modern accommodation and equipment in different domains.
  • We always opt for cultivation techniques with the least negative environmental impact. The use of pesticide is limited as we support the introduction of mechanical weed control, where possible.
Article in the spotlight: Parsnip

Parsnips, a forgotten vegetable? Not anymore! We are true fans of this rich winter carrot. That's why we put the spotlight on some of its characteristics:
  • Parsnip is already available in Summer, but would get its nice sweet and aniseed taste by growing  in the cold soil.
  • Parsnips have a binding effect thanks to the starch content. Handy in stews and soup to help thicken the dish a bit.
Solar panels

During Summer of 2019, solar panels were installed on the roofs of our cold stores. Maintenance and cleaning are provided on an annual basis, so that these panels are used to their full potential. Our investment is clearly visible on the aerial picture.
The amount of energy that we saved during 2020 is the equivalent of:
  • 30.267.275 km by electric car
  • 2615 tons of CO2
  • 217.5 g of uranium
  • 731.7 tons of coal
