Week 10 - Term 1 Newsletter - Thursday, 7 April 2022

We are almost at the end of Term One and Easter is now just around the corner. Even though these last 10 weeks have been challenging, restrictive and disruptive it has been really nice to have everyone back at school for a whole term and to have had a whole term in the same Covid setting.

Earlier this term we undertook a school wide assessment programme to better understand the impact of last years Covid disruption on learning levels and learning behaviours. These assessments informed both individual learning plans as well as helped us understand the wider impact.

Our PAT assessment data analysis showed that our Year 3 - 6 cohorts continued to achieve in line with our historic averages. It was very pleasing to see that we did not see any significant slip or drop in these results.

Our overall teacher judgements (OTJ's) measure wider learning levels and behaviours. We have seen some drops in reading, writing and maths across the board - this was to be expected after almost 6 months of disrupted school. The staff, SLT and Board have reviewed this data thoroughly and we have developed clear year level plans to get back on track are we are already seeing children reengage and accelerate.

I have to say our teachers have been phenomenal! Not only did they work to deliver the best possible learning from home programme last year, they are now working hard to reengage and catch up on lost time.

We are really pleased with how things are progressing!

The Board has been using this data to inform the schools plans for the year. A board newsletter will come out next week which will talk to this a little more. In the meantime you may be interested in viewing our strategic plan cover pages

Phil Toomer
STAFF NEWS
As we mentioned earlier in the year, Matt Aukett will be leaving Meadowbank School at the end of this term. Matt is embarking on a worldwide adventure with his family!

I want to thank Matt for his enormous contribution to our school over the last 6 years. His strategic and operational skills and expertise have been particularly valuable over these last 2 years with the management of the pandemic. I know many children and families have really appreciated his calm and reassuring presence on the Senior Campus!

We wish Matt all the best.
COVID UPDATE
We are aware that there will be another government review of CPF settings next week and we hope we will get an update on when we can expect to move to Orange. At this stage we are planning on the assumption that we will be in Orange at the start of Term 2.  We will of course be ready to continue in Red if need be.

The government vaccination mandate lifted earlier this week for those working in the education sector. In practical terms, however, we continue to operate with a fully vaccinated staff (including contractors), so nothing has changed in the immediate term.

We are currently working our way through a Health and Safety Risk Assessment to determine if there are a few specific roles that should continue to require vaccination. We will update you once we have completed this process.

A few reminders in the meantime...
  • When you need to report your child absent please use the School App Absentee button or link on the school website.
  • We have seen a significant increase in children needing to attend outside of school appointments. While we are happy to facilitate this, it is most helpful if these are booked for the start or end of the day.
POLICY REVIEWS
As part of our regular review cycle the BOT are currently reviewing our Visitors , School Closure and Earthquake policies.  If you would like to provide feedback on this, please click on the links. GUEST SPEAKER - KAREN YOUNG

We are excited to announce that Meadowbank School will be hosting International Author and Psychologist, Karen Young in Term 3. Creator of 'Hey Sigmund', an online resource accessed by millions each year, which supplies contemporary information on anxiety and resilience. More information to come next term. In the meantime please mark your diaries for Tuesday 23rd August, 7pm.
STUDENTS WITH ALERGIES
At Meadowbank School we aim to create the safest possible environment for all students. At the beginning of each year, for children with severe allergies, we review your child's Individual Analphylaxis Management Plan with parents to make sure that our information and understanding is up to date.

Some classes will have also received a letter home to say that there is a child with an allergy in your child's class. This process is designed to raise awareness of what steps can be taken to reduce the risk for children with an allergy. We also educate the children during class.

It is a team effort to keep everybody safe and we appreciate the support we have from parents. If you have any questions, please make sure that you see your child's teacher.

TAURIKURA

Our Taurikura Programme helps us learn about looking after ourselves and others. Taurikura translates to ‘Thrive’  because we want all our students to learn the wellbeing tools they need to thrive in today’s world. Each term classes participate in lessons that centre around aspects of wellbeing. Wellbeing is an evolving topic and each year the objectives are reviewed and altered based on what students need.

In Term Two our focus is ‘Connecting with others’ where students will unpack a range of social skills. To equip our students with everyday tools, classes will also take a few minutes each week to learn mindtime tools. This helps with focus, being in the moment and using their breath to regulate emotions.

The wellbeing of our students is always a priority at Meadowbank School. After a few years of change and uncertainty, our staff are committed to helping our students feel safe, confident and ready for learning. For some practical ideas for wellbeing, keep up to date with MBS news!
